Another "Unknown Illness"

Just how sick to missionaries have to get before they are allowed to seek professional medical treatment? And, no a "blessing" doesn't count.

Missionaries are cannon fodder for LDS Inc.

Time after time over the years I've seen this.

Total lack of medical care for the missionaries.

Too many preventable deaths.

Maybe one day a class action lawsuit?

The time has passed for class action style lawsuits. For the church, that would be a trivial cost of doing business. The MP needs to be directly held responsible. By the father. On the field of honor.

Look, people get sick and die. But it is so easy to hide behind an organization. People are getting sick of that dodge.

The poor thing. She would have been home by Christmas. The article did say that she was hospitalized. Possibly Meningitis?

Missionaries covenant to sacrifice their time, talents, and everything else to the church. I suppose that includes lives.

You think parents who are so brainwashed they send their kids on a mission will sue the church? TSCC knows they won't and it shows.

I'm sure the family already has a go****me account to retrieve her body from the Philippines. So many members assume the church steps up to the plate and does the honorable thing in times of crisis, but they do not.

Two of my family docs served medical missions. One in Mongolia and one in S Africa. I was told they were there to serve the medical needs of missionaries in the field. Someone drop the ball in this instance?...or the cult not wanting to pay the shot for hospitalization?

The lack of, and delay of proper medical care is exactly why we talked our son out of going on a mission. He had a serious medical
condition although you wouldn't know it just looking at him. TSCC is complicit in the medical neglect of missionaries. We simply had to show our son a few tragic stories such as this one and he was out.

Here's a possible timeline

1-2 days She feels ill, but keeps up her missionary work. Sacrifice brings blessings.

3-4 days She starts taking Tylenol or readily available pain/fever reducer, but keeps working.

5-6 days She has to rest. She can't get out of bed.

6-7 days She contacts priesthood leaders for a blessing. It is only requested because she is embarrassed that she can not be a productive missionary. She seeks a blessing because her mission president will chastise her for not seeking one sooner.

8-9 days Her missionary companion is afraid and worried. Companion is advised to get sick missionary to a "friendly" doctor of LDS missionaries. Doctor sends missionary to hospital because she has serious illness that can not be remedied with basic antibiotics.

Messy adds- I went through a similar situation in a stateside mission. Companion became sick. He didn't want to admit feeling sick. He had a virus and thought basic aspirin would help. He refused a blessing until he became bedridden. I had the mission president pray about his condition over night. I was chastised for not giving a ph blessing sooner (my companion refused and I was told that I should have forced one upon him). Companion was directed to see a missionary-church friendly doctor who prescribed some codeine laced Tylenol. No lab tests were done. Companion got worse and I begged the district leader for help. DL came with member and took him to the ER. He got labs and made a full recovery from being hospitalized. He had a dangerous form of meningitis. He could have become blind or lost hearing or his limbs.

This is how the church rolls.

Added- Another companion went home and died within 6 weeks of returning to his home. He died from pancreatic cancer. Simple helath screenings at 6 months might have detected this and given him an earlier treatment before it was too late.

Yes, from numerous reports, that's how it normally goes. It's more likely than not that valuable time was wasted before the girl got the medical attention that she desperately needed.

The fact a cult with $150B requires their missionaries to fund their own missions and then instills in them a culture where nose to the grindstone/not telling anyone with authority you're ill/PH blessings are a first line of treatment is pure evil.

She was only 20. Probably married to Joseph Smith by now.

The church would deflect any health deficiencies to the missionaries themselves. Either it was attributed to individual poor diet and or the lack of personal hygiene/grooming.

The church even made extremely passive-aggressive judgmental videos to embarrass and shame missionaries for their poor health.

No Virginia, illness couldn't possibly come from a slum apartment full of roaches, rats and ants. There was no safe place as food stored in the refrigerator would be compromised due to grand infestation. The fridge was replaced (a used one each time) because rats would chew up the power cord. They were even consuming the electrical wires. The lights would go off and it would smell bad from varmints being electrocuted.

Didn't matter how many times an exterminator came, the bugs/rodents from the other tennants would move in.

What a waste of a life.
