I play and sing in a band with a guy whos sister was married to Chuck Negron from 3 Dog Night for about 11 years. He told me a few stories about Chuck, sounds like he was quite the piece of work.

Serious response.

I'd return to SM faster than you could Hie to Kolob if we could spend a year answering all of Joan Osborne's questions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDdOnl0bHO4

… If God had a name what would it be?
And would you call it to his face?
If you were faced with Him in all His glory
What would you ask if you had just one question?
… And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
… What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
… If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in Jesus and the Saints
And all the prophets?
… And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
… What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
… Just tryin' to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope, maybe in Rome
… And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
… What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
… Just tryin' to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone?
Back up to heaven all alone
Just tryin' to make his way home
… Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome

That song speaks to me as well. It humanizes God and suggests the importance of every individual person.

I'm a 90s kid. This one-hit wonder is etched in my being.

Now.. sorry if I'm about to ruin it.

Your Mormon colors are coming out!

“As man is, God once was; as God is, man may become.” - Lorenso Snow

Sounds like the awful song is playing around with the same ideas

“If God had a name what would it be?”

Jehovah? Elohim? Adam? I always get confused.

“And would you call it to his face?”

Only after an appropriate handshake.

“If you were faced with Him in all His glory”

I spent all those years in boring SM and weird Temple. F-yeah I’m ready!

What would you ask if you had just one question?

What is the sea of glass spoken of by John, 4th chapter, and 6th verse of the Revelation, D&C 77:1 (stolen from r/exmormon)

There are two at the top of my list, both the same artist. The first will be familiar to most as it was a top 10 single nationally (and it went all the way to #1 on Salt Lake City's KCPX during the first week of November 1971):

The second is, I believe, taken from a previous solo effort.

From a musical point of view, it's rather boring, but I quite like the lyrics. The last two lines may be the most relevant:

"I just believe in me.
The dream is over."

(Of course, for some of you, Mormonism was a nightmare that is now, thankfully, over.)

"Imagine" -- the David Archuleta version.

That reminds me - Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks sang Imagine at Rosalynn Carter's memorial service yesterday.

The service was held in a church. There was a pastor and two other church officials running the program and speaking (briefly - no big long sermons).

So it was eyebrow-raising for me when these country stars get up and Trisha sings Imagine with Garth playing guitar and quietly singing along.

Because - here are the first 2 verses:

Imagine there's no heaven

It's easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us, only sky

Imagine all the people

Livin' for today

Imagine there's no countries

It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion, too

Imagine all the people

Livin' life in peace

You're in a big church, full of people, saying goodbye to a well-known person and the first line of the song says "imagine there's no heaven". Then the second verse mentions "no religion" as a positive.

It made me laugh.

I also thought good on the pastor who went with the flow.

And obviously the music would have been run by the Carter family so they were good with it too.

The Mormon version could be:

Imagine there's no BO-O-M
It's easy if you try
No Smith in chapel
No white temples too
Imagine all the people
Liking their Sundays ...

:)

Yeah, I don't think Imagine was the best song to align with the Carter's beliefs. Yes, everyone living in peace fits them well, but not the bit about no heaven. I wonder why on earth they picked that song? Maybe Mrs. Carter requested it. You never know.

80's depeche mode had a lot of good ones, that's right up there with the chorus from Blasphemous Rumors:

I don't want to start any Blasphemous rumors
but I think that god's got a sick sense of humor
and when I die I expect to find him laughing.
