When I started my freshman year at the Y in the fall of 1950, we all had to take two standardized tests. One was the MMPI test for personality traits. The large reading room in the Heber J. Grant Library was filled with us new students. As we pondered over the written questions, proctors moved around the room ready to help. There was one question that puzzled me: "Do you ever hear voices when there is no one else in the room?" I didn't know what it meant. Of course I might hear loud voices of people in the next room. Or I might have a radio playing a newscast. I raised my hand, and a proctor came over. I asked him what the question really meant, since there were other possibilities that had nothing to do with my personality. He said, "It means, are you crazy!"
I should have realized that if Joseph Smith said that he heard voices (of angels or God) then he was also saying that he was crazy.
