When I started my freshman year at the Y in the fall of 1950, we all had to take two standardized tests. One was the MMPI test for personality traits. The large reading room in the Heber J. Grant Library was filled with us new students. As we pondered over the written questions, proctors moved around the room ready to help. There was one question that puzzled me: "Do you ever hear voices when there is no one else in the room?" I didn't know what it meant. Of course I might hear loud voices of people in the next room. Or I might have a radio playing a newscast. I raised my hand, and a proctor came over. I asked him what the question really meant, since there were other possibilities that had nothing to do with my personality. He said, "It means, are you crazy!"

I should have realized that if Joseph Smith said that he heard voices (of angels or God) then he was also saying that he was crazy.

Crazy or…dishonest. ;)

I have the same bewildering memory of the MMPI test as an innocent incoming freshman.

The most troubling questions were along the lines of, "Is your sexlife satisfactory."

If I said "Yes", it was implying I had one, which I didn't.
If I said "No", it implied that I had one and it was bad or I didn't have one and wanted one.

The Mormon culture of shame and guilt around sex made me think I wasn't supposed to need, want, think, of even be aware of sexuality and it was a trick question to trap me.

>> The most troubling questions were along the lines of, "Is your sexlife satisfactory."

And why would they even need to know that, anyway? That's something that you would discuss with your partner, your physician, or a counselor. It's a private matter. Yet another example of Mormon boundary pushing.

That's the kind of thing that conditions people to not flinch when asked what is going on in their uteruses.
Religion has conditioned people to think intrusive and strange things (e.g. voices) are acceptable if you follow their rules.

A quick look at the MMPI shows it's been updated several times. Originally, the sexual questions were probing homosexuality aspects, but later assessment showed that query was useless. Duh!

Some profiles were designed to show over-compliance, dishonesty, schizophrenia, etc.

I tried to get results about my profile but was told to come back when the right guy was there. I was told that my answers showed "guardedness". Well, hell yes!

At least you weren't told that you had "Lamanite tendencies"...

I went to Rick'avoid the draft, then on a mission for same reason.

During the winters, we Dormites had to walk a mile in FREEZING REXBURG WEATHER to get meals at the Barf-a-teria;

At least I wasn't killed or
njured in Viet Nam...

I'm very sorry others did.

365 means "No way on earth we're taking this guy. He'd get a carrier sunk."

My Best Memory of BYU is seeing it in my rear view mirror.

(I think Jim McMahon said that.)

I wouldn't be surprised if Jim McMahon saw a good many rear views while at the Lord's University.

once seeing this drop dead gorgeous girl walking into one of those big theater type classes at the Y with her arm interlaced into the arm of some very average looking guy. "What's up with that?" I thought. I later learned that very average looking guy was Jim McMahon.

So you are a coward who lets others answer the call of their Nation?

Never trust a prophet who doesn't hear voices in his head.

I suppose a lot of that is staged, but if not, it is unintentionally funny!

The Kool-Aid and shake the bed things went right over their heads.

Remember taking those tests a number of times. Always got red flagged as I would ask questions about questions that made no sense and especially when I refused to pick a choice and wrote in my own explantion - or crossed out their question and wrote "what jackass came up with this one" on it.

I did that a couple of times myself on certain questions or requirements that I encountered.

They did not like that at all!
