face cards, cards with 'faces' Jack, King, Queen & Joker were strictly verboten a while back in Morland, better to attend a temple session(s) than 'waste your time' with that amusement!!!
I never got the distinction between others such as ROOK (popular at one time with MOs)..
I guess that other instructions supplanted substituted those important words of inspiration; Continuing Revelation!!
I thought the whole Rook thing was hilariously hypocritical. You could check out decks of Rook cards at the BYU games center, and kids waiting in line to get into the Varsity Theater (that marks me as old!) would check out cards and play sitting on the floor waiting for the theater to open.
Rook had 4 suits and 13 ranks, so they were identical to a standard card deck except for the names and pictures. Any game that could be played with face cards could be played with Rook cards.
Face cards were discouraged in the church, but it's not like being in a bridge club would keep you from having a TR or callings.
I spent a lot of time in HS playing pinochle, which uses a special deck of 48 cards, 24 of which are face cards. My mother, the Nazi-Mormon, didn't have a problem with it that I can recall. Maybe she missed the memo.
I got several elders into Magic the Gathering on my mission:
After being paired up with a like minded comp, we went out and bought a couple MTG Decks and it quickly replaced morning scripture study. It didn't take long for it to spread to my district and subsequently banned mission wide.
A photo was taken of my district and I playing MTG on P-day.
Recently I came across a print out of that photo...
THEY PHOTO-SHOPPED MTG AND REPLACED IT WITH A CHESSBOARD.
