I've never read her work, but I have certainly heard the name. Canadians take their writers very seriously, and they have produced some really top-flight authors. I wouldn't be surprised if at least parts of the country have lowered flags to half-staff in honor of Alice Munro.

Miriam Toews, Mordecai Richler, Robertson Davies, Margaret Atwood, and Alice Munro - heavy hitters all. And those are just the ones a semi-literate computer nerd like me can name off the top of my head.

When I lived in Winnipeg, I was about 2 miles from McNally Robinson Booksellers, which I think is the best bookstore I have ever seen. (OK, Elliott Bay Book Company gets a shout-out too) It is basically Disneyland for books. I found out later that the store has a national reputation in Canada. It was just blind luck that I happened to live near it.

Ditto.
I like short stories but for some reason her themes didn't jump out to me. Maybe I'll try again, just to see why the structure of her short stories were so masterful.

Correct, BoJ:

"The sign at the edge of town proudly declares Wingham as the birthplace of Alice Munro, one of the country’s most revered storytellers."

"The Township of North Huron will fly its flags at half-mast in an act of honour and respect, expressing a collective sense of the sorrow shared by all."

“The Moons of Jupiter” is probably a good place to start. If you like Faulkner, you’ll like Munro.

I’m processing it.

“Weeks After Alice Munro’s Death, Daughter Tells of Dark Family Secret
Andrea Skinner said in the Toronto Star that her stepfather sexually abused her at age 9, and that her mother stayed with him after she learned of it.”

Good heavens. I read this sub line earlier as saying "quality sperm". Guess I got it mixed up with the actual sperm thread. See what happens when you glance at something in a hurry.

Spam. Sperm. Easy mistake. :)

And I'm a big time proofreader. Big fail this time.

Ha! That’s okay. At least you didn’t post that someone was in ICE custody when they weren’t. Errrr…

Beth!

I just checked out two of her books (collections of her stories) from my local library. That tidbit will be something to keep in the back of my mind as I read. Poor Alice. How horrible.
