The category was 'Sects'. When the player asked for Sects for $1000.00 Ken said "You're saying that very carefully but let's talk about Sects". The contestant wagered his whole dollar amount and Ken said "Ah, an expert in Sects". Because of Ken's slight lisp it totally sounded like he was saying 'sex'. Everybody laughed.

The champ is addressed as they/them and I must say Ken seems comfortable when players identify that way. So maybe I'm getting used to him now.

I'm disappointed on this.

No Class on that one, I wonder how the producers will think/react.

Yeah, I figured Ken thought he was being funny with some kind of innuendo about a word that almost sounds like sex. Eye roll.

Maybe he was trying to tie the categories "Sects" with "N the City," as if people wouldn't get it.

It seemed awkward and juvenile to me for a couple seconds but maybe it gave a few smiles.

I've never detected any kind of a lisp though.

Edit word try to trying.

Oh, funny dagny re lisp. I noticed it all the way through the category. He's precise in pronunciation but I've always heard a lisp with him, it sounds like.

If you pronounce sects distinctly there shouldn't be any confusion about what you're saying.

I know it's picky of me. Can't help it sometimes.

But I think he means well and obviously many think he's doing a good job.

Who the hell is Ken?

Ken Jennings, Mormon, host of Jeopardy! TV game show.

A couple of us mention it every now and then when there is a Mormon clue - the frequency of which has ticked up since he became host of the program.

No big deal. Just fun to grumble about something silly related to moism, for a change from the deadly serious stuff.

And he won Jeopardy a whole bunch of times as a contestant. His wikipedia entry goes into all the details, including some of his comments that landed him in mild hot water over the years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Jennings

ETA:
Jennings holds numerous game show records: he is the highest-earning American game show contestant, having won money on five different programs, including $4,522,700 on Jeopardy!. His original appearance on the program marks the longest winning streak, and he also holds the record for the highest average correct responses per game. Additionally, Jennings was awarded the first-place prize in Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time (2020).
========

In his first run on Jeopardy, he won 74 consecutive rounds.

Tonight (12/16/24) they had a question about who settled in Utah, as the basis for Utah's Pioneer Day holiday.
The answer was Brigham Young.

I didn't think most people outside of Utah would know about Pioneer Day, but someone guessed it correctly.

I still feel a twinge of embarrassment when I hear the words Brigham Young.

Oh, I didn't see this & started another thread to say that's the 2nd recent clue about BY in a short period of time. They must be totally clueless, worse than I thought.

(yawn) I guess we have another evidence that, in spite of appearances, Mos aren't perfect, even tho many believe so...

Yes, I caught that!
No one seemed to laugh, I suppose because he moved on to the next question quickly. I chuckle-groaned. Ken told a funny!

Ken Jennings is now hosting Jeopardy?
So many great cultural moments I've missed since leaving the US again in 2014.

Yes. At some point after longtime host Alex Trebek passed away, there was a long string of substitutes. The show eventually went with both Ken Jennings and actress Mayim Bialik, and now it's down to just Ken Jennings.

Mayim is very cool. She's a neuroscientist I think. The game show was beneath her level of intellect. Jennings was no match for her.

Despite the rumors, KJ appears to be solid in the position; IDK if producers & advertisers see a wholesome appeal to his tenure, but What Works Works; if they upset the apple cart there would be significant fallout.

Jeopardy is just starting and Ken read off the categories.
The last two categories are "Book Of" next to "Merman."

So, Ken says them together with a little snicker. No one seemed to respond to the lame Mormon humor that I could hear.

OK. It's time for another report about the most important things on Jeopardy!

About a week ago, they had a question about the longest distance between highway offramps. Answer Utah.
This week they had a question about the beehive on a flag. Answer Utah.
Tonight they had a question about lyrics in a Broadway show. Answer Book of Mormon.
Tonight they had a question about the big "dead sea" lake in USA losing volume. Answer Great Salt Lake.

Oddly there were no questions about Arkansas or Rhode Island recently that I can recall. /sarcasm

Yeah. I thought of you, dagny. What is The Book of Mormon. They can't get away from that moniker so easily. Unless they discover a new book. Maybe an update by BY, not mentioning Mormon. At least not in the title.

Seems that ex-Mormons are very sensitive to Ken J and any Q/A that are LDS or Utah based.

Step away, it's just a TV show, nothing is that important, think of the people and businesses affected by the California fires or the people in North Carolina that are still trying to recover from the impacts of the hurricanes.

Then there are those impacted by the Ukraine/Russian war, and/or the Israel/Hamas war.

Sensitive? No. Just observations about how the show is going with a Mormon host. And how he/they are using a secular show to get themselves mentioned on national TV.

Watching TV shows, as many do, and discussing various programs or music, people, current affairs, movies, whatever - does not mean that we are *not* thinking of people impacted by tragedy and war. In fact, sometimes watching TV helps to get our minds **off** tragedy when sometimes things can be overwhelming.

Each to their own.

And this is a board to discuss Mormonism - which has many aspects - some of which bug some folks. Others can read our blurbs or not as they see fit.

Sometimes it helps to be less serious for a wee minute or two.

I know. Jeopardy is kind of a joke hobby or distraction at this point. I enjoy chatting with Nighty about it.

I'm horrified by all the things going on too. Yet here you are on RfM too.

I have zero faith in humanity at this stage of my life. I think about the cruelty and heartache happening in the world continuously. I can't fix everything by myself. Can you?

We hit a deer with our car yesterday. It ran off but must have been hurt. I've been in tears all day just over that.

You never know how people are trying to cope with things, or what they do in the shadows to try and help.

Yeah, sometimes you just need to take a deep breath and let your brain rest. All 'yall should be happy I can't find a way to bring up the British Royal Family and tiaras!
