SEL (social-emotional learning) is a big topic in the public schools these days. It's often a mandated part of the learning day. The cynical part of me thinks that it's the schools' attempt to do the job that parents can't or won't do -- produce decent human beings.

The Mormon-influenced company Franklin Covey is in on the deal. They have a SEL program called, "Leader in Me" available for PK-12 schools. I'm sure that it produces a very nice profit for them. Here is one teacher's response -- "It’s a leadership program that uses the Latter-day Saint’s values, but secular. The values themselves aren’t bad, it just feels culty with phrases that sound like mumbojumbo to everyone else."

It's a program that is implemented all over the U.S., and internationally as well.

An interesting, insightful comment from that teacher. "Feels culty" - should be a red flag to everyone. I'd like to see some examples of what the teacher may be referring to.

Highly effective leadership strategies, highly effective skills...

I think schools always want to turn every student into a highly productive robot worker.

A few websites. First, here is the official website for Leader in Me:

http://www.leaderinme.org

Second, here is tinformation about the program from the Franklin Covey website:

https://www.franklincovey.com/solutions/education/

Now here is a site with a critical question and some critical answers about the program:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Teachers/comments/w02l6r/leader_in_me_7_habits_legit_or_not/

Since I'm one of those who tends to think the negative until results show otherwise, I think that it is critical to look at some of the critical comments of the program found on the redEdit site I posted last before any implementation begins.

Thanks for that last link from the teachers' Reddit. They had some interesting things to say about the program.

Steven Covey's Seven Habits book was spectacularly successful in the business community. It too was mostly secular, but it had the occasional Mormon catchphrase in it, and it quoted people like Ezra Benson if I recall correctly. It's been a lot of years since I read it.

So, finding the same in this program would not surprise me in the least. I'd expect to run across words like 'covenant' and 'stewardship' now and then.

I have a friend from HS who had quite a successful career as a business consultant. He had worked with Clayton Christensen at Harvard Business School. My friend is very much a never-Mo, but he was enormously impressed with Christensen. Christensen was on the board of Franklin Covey, and passed away in 2020.

is that program founded around EVERYONE becoming a leader?

Oh, my bad! in the AI world they're won't be a need for followers;

cars, boats-ships, and trucks and perhaps aircraft won't crews!

we're well on the way to AI only banks, but what about McDonalds (DQ, Burger King, etc.)?

If no one has to WORK, who will staff hotels, motels, cruise ships and resorts for Leaders to patronize?

psst! will that also mean no more violence/wars?
After All, there might be an upside!!!
