Supposedly a number of missionaries in Hawaii were using burner phones to break mission rules and engage in ungodly activities. Anybody know the facts?

What happens to the missionaries' personal phones while on a mission? Do the phones "go with" or stay at home? How do they contact their parents?

Same for other devices such as an IPAD.

If they were using burner phones, good for them. The no phone rule is absurd.

The entire concept of a mission is absurd, unless it is merely a way to full brainwash the missionaries by forcing them to find ways to continue suspending disbelief, indefinitely, in the absurd myth.

Missionaries going to the MTC receive a Samsung church phone.
https://tech.churchofjesuschrist.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=43236

Other phones are not supposed to go with them. I expect these phones are fully monitored. Web, Call/text use, location, apps and so on. Probably locked from other installs as well.

Other mtc around the world probably supply phones more appropriate to the market.

As to other burner /pre-paid phones, that's probably handled by local mission rules.

I wouldn't think that would get you sent home itself. Likely more what was being done on the phones if the story is true.

Bummer loosing your phone # for inactivity or non-payment...

They’re 18, for crying out loud. It’s not too late for them to start their life over with a new phone number at age 20.

Mormon mission=hell on earth...at least that's the way I perceived it as I approached mission age 60 years ago..

Is admission to uby a cinch for a honorably released RM? Do they participate with Pell & other aide systems?

All I see is a tight-fisted, stingy Corp

You buy in, you know the rules.

Getting stuck with a jerk Prez or AP or other leaders - just part of the deal.

Only a Jerk companion would rat u out for limited cell use;
even some missionaries can walk & chew gum…

I can imagine 'hear' the inquisition now between the MP with assistant(s) interviewing the mish while attempting to catch the mish in a lie, especially if the MP knows the cell number...

If mish denies, assistant leaves the room & calls the phone...

I can't comment on the current situation with burner phones but I can comment on pre cell phone days of long distance and land lines.

My mom sent me off with a phone card to call them for emergencies. I think I started with AT&T but upgraded to MCI and Friends.

Yes, I called my parents more frequently than was allowed. I know some of my companions reported me. And the real cool ones asked to borrow it. It was free to use on Sunday evenings.

The apartment phone bills were managed by the mission office elders. The bill often showed a gap, no phone numbers dialed but phone in use for a duration of time.

I had to face my mission president and explain it. I played dumb and offered sensible Mormon explanations. -Maybe a spirit was using the phone. Or maybe
maybe an investigator believes that Jesus visited the ancient Americas.

My MP wasn't buying it. -No, Elder Goop I know that you're illegally using the phone. Are you calling phone sex numbers? I am going to get to the bottom of this.

Well he never did.

Thanks.

I largely share my experiences of trying to be an accepted and faithful member, but having zero luck.I really tried to fit in and do all that was asked of me. The Mormon experiences didn't work for me and I really believe that I didn't go out of my way to rebel or buck the Mormon belief system.

I'd rather my missionary son be sent home in a pine box than be sent home for having a burner phone.

True believer.

I would likely have sought out any opportunity to challengeag the rules had I been forced to go on a mission.

Good grief. I never went on a mission, but I can't imagine living under the boot of a missionary president who has no sense of humor and so-called companions who rat each other out for brownie points.

It sounds like an oppressive dictatorship, where neighbors rat each other out to gain points with the ruling party.
