The Utah lege spent its first week as it has for the last 4 years, introducing laws to stomp on trans rights, because what could possibly be more urgent?

Now in week two they can address the slightly less urgent issues. This year, it is a request to some entomological society to rename the Mormon Cricket, because Satan. For starters, it’s a katydid.

Even the Church’s style guide says it is OK to use the M-word in proper names like the Mormon Trail. Still, it is important to stop Satan.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Katydid and the Seagulls” does not roll off the tongue anywhere near as nicely as The Crickets and the Seagulls. So there’s that to consider.

It would be a kindness actually to stop dissing innocent crickets with the name Mormon. They have suffered the demoralizing term long enough.

This needs to be a law? Not a church decree as it should be, but a law to take up legislative time? More proof that Utah is indeed a theocracy.

I nominate Steeple Cricket, cause steeples are important enough to sue small towns into bankruptcy.

Was the Lighted Pen involved?

Russ must have installed new batteries, he & his posse are back at work albeit ever so slightly behind the scenes...

Thanks for the laugh. I needed it today.

From the SLT:

https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2025/01/29/mormon-cricket-that-name-just-has/

Headline:

"The Anabrus simplex doesn’t know it is the subject of new legislation. Neither does the insect know that some consider its name a “victory for Satan.”

Excerpts:

“Owens [“Rep. Doug Owens, a Millcreek Democrat”] is committed to the cause, explaining that the problem is in the specific pairing of the “Mormon” term with an insect many regard as a pest.

He is asking the “Entomological Society of America to assign the Anabrus simplex a new common name — ideally one that is “respectful, inclusive and accurately descriptive.”

“People refer to it so pejoratively,” the Latter-day Saint ... said, “that it feels like a slur.”

“Owens stressed that historical erasure is not the bill’s intent, but that there were other options — “pioneer cricket,” for instance — that could serve the same purpose without the baggage.”

“Wilson [Utah State University-Tooele entomologist] offered his own suggestion, if indeed the name must change to accommodate modern sensibilities.

“Why not,” he chuckled, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints katydid?”

The inscription on the Seagull Monument in SLC [dedicated 1913] reads

"Seagull Monument

"Erected in grateful remembrance of the mercy of God to the Mormon pioneers"

The use of "mormon" here (a descriptive qualifier, not part of a name) seems to be out of bounds and a Satan-pleaser. Shouldn't the church replace this repugnant and offensive slur of an inscription with something more "respectful, inclusive and accurately descriptive"?

What are they going to do about the Book of Mormon?

I guess it's OK because it's a proper noun?

But how do they expect outsiders to know when it's OK to use the M word and when it's seen as a slur?

A bit of a conundrum when your very name is confusing to non-club members.

Too, I'm still laughing about "pioneer cricket".

Wow. Your tax dollars at work!

They are trying so hard to revise history.

They are making the M word something shameful. That shows they are ashamed of their history. If they really believed what JS claimed, they wouldn't work so hard to hide it, membership numbers be damned.

Utah lege, you're going to have to try harder to be more lame than Idaho's lege at the moment.

Is the name 'Mormon Cricket' officially of any notice ANYWHERE prior to this lunacy?
