When my ex went to prison for doing the same thing the bishop would make the 4 hour drive once a month to visit him. That rat b*astard bishop never, not once, asked how we were doing.
It was during a TR interview that he told me he had been going to see the ex in prison. I asked him why didn't he excommunicate him (this was shortly after his conviction) and he said it was because the ex never confessed to him. I said, well, did you bring it up and being the coward that he was he said no, he did not.
The ex admitted on a recording what he did to my child, the bishop knew that but still "felt sorry for him".
This was an eye-opener for me. A few women told me that their husbands told them that they were not convinced he did it but the women believed it.
The bishop announced it in one of their meetings and then EVERYONE knew. Older men would come up to my daughter, put their disgusting arm around her and tell her she should forgive him, she'll find a good husband - gawd it made me sick and I felt no qualms in telling them to not touch her and they were not to give my child any "advice".
The church always recognizes the man as salvageable, and as someone deserving rehabilitation. That's why, all else being equal, the women receive harsh treatment, excommunication, etc., but a young rapist will be put forward as a missionary candidate.
"That's why, all else being equal, the women receive harsh treatment,"
---------- Not always. I have seen multiple cases in which old conservative church leaders fall for damsel-in-distress manipulation by younger women.
I think the common principle is that whoever is more adept, through relationships or personal history or pure luck, at tugging at the leader's heartstrings will get the better deal.
So much depends on the idiosyncratic biases of the particular leader. . .

I remember the general conference talk where victims were told to council with their bishops to determine if they (the victim) needed to repent of anything they might have done to cause the abuse.
The church cares about holding onto reliable tithe payers. When confused about why the church is doing something, just follow the money. Unless something has changed since I was in a bishopric a long time ago, the elders quorum president was one of the callings where the person being called needed to have a current temple recommend.
We had a sex offender move into our ward long ago. Welcomed with open arms by the bishopric. They called his wife to be young womens leader and had mtgs etc., at their house. My wife went to the bishopric and told them our daughter with NEVER go to their house or be around the guy. The bishop didn't care. My wife then made sure the guy was placed on the local sex offender registry and told people they could look him up online. Mr smooth totally bamboozled the bishopic and told them the conviction was wrong etc., and those idiots believed him.
I am very grateful for people like your wife who inform other people of the risk and danger of sex offender. My former ward in Germany had a pedophile as a Scoutmaster. The pedophile went to prison for 7 years and got released. The neighbor wards had no idea that member x had been to prison and what happened. Now I have e-mailed every bishop in Germany, Switzerland and Austria Incase he will visit their wards that they are informed
"BREAKING: New civil lawsuit says a former Mormon area authority 70 helped a convicted child sexual abuser be removed from two state sex offender registries in 2017, then became a mission president in Spain and invited him to visit at the church's expense; offender molested a child there, suit says"
