They brought in a female speaker from another ward today. Her assignment was the atonement. WOW. This is what I learned.
1. If we had accepted Lucifer's plan and come to earth he would be the person that atones for us.
2. All of the people born her were at different stages or worthiness in the preexistence. We all had different degrees of sin so that is why we needed Christ's atonement. Due to our preexistence conditions.
3. Babies when they are born are not perfect for the atonement applies to them. Why? It is based on how good they were in the preexistence. How much the atonement applies to them.
4. The atonement will applies to us after we leave this earth and go to the spirit world as we will sin there too so we need the atonement. This process will take place over a long period of time as we move forward.
5. Its because we have free agency that the atonement works for us. (Has the Church not taught that its moral agency now instead of when I grew up it was free agency)

I will not comment on the first speaker. It was just as bad. Speaker was very sincere but she quoted a conference talk from a 70, and I could go to the same conference and give her quotes from the 12 that contradict and counter act what she was reading.

I have been a member all my life and never once heard the crap I heard today anywhere in Church. I told a couple of people that I needed a drink after this meeting and I do not drink. I guess anything can be taught now from the pulpit.

Bottom line this was a TBM sister. Has a testimony of the gospel (so she says,) What she told us was true.(so she says) Married with three children. I left church building wondering where I had gone off the rails!!!!

Wow! I thought the things that were previously taught were goofy enough, but this really tops the cake!

She sounds dumber than a box of rocks.

Oh, I completely disagree. I think she will very much resonate with the BIC crowd. Her blather sounds very much like what Alvin Dyer and Bruce R McConkie used to spout, and they were folk heroes back in their day.

I think it likely she will get blowback from SLC for being more popular than the hierarchy. The very fact that a woman was invited from another ward to give a talk like this has a very “you gotta hear this” vibe to it. The Suits may be desperate for some excitement in the church, but they will not tolerate being upstaged.

She may be delusional. She may be very creative. She may be manipulative. Dumb she is not.

Surprisingly low level of consistency in local ‘talks’ (I now hate that word); GA speeches come & go like the tide or moon cycles too.

Wow, she was just making stuff up, even for Mormons! I wonder if she is related to Klingon Skousen by any chance? ;-)

I would except this person was from another ward and think is making the rounds in the stake as we have this special program to get us ready for Easter. I have the feeling she gave this talk in her ward and the SP was there and liked it so we all get to hear it. All our talks and activities are to build us up just like we get built up for Christmas re: Jesus. This is a regional activity. So far I have not seen much excitement.

Sounds like a creative rehash of Alvin R Dyer’s “For What Purpose” talk that circulated in the Mo underground back in the 60s. It was the “deep doctrine” justification for Mormon racism.

You seem to think that being taught from a pulpit has some kind of special meaning. You're conditioned to accept whatever is said. So, when this crackpot spewed forth obvious BS, you were in a bind. Applying critical thought felt naughty because you're not supposed to do that.

People go to church for lots of reasons. Being led is one of them. However, as you recently noticed, it's the blind leading the blind.

Racism exists all over the world, but North American style racism is different. It's not subtle. It's more up front. It's more innate. Many white people base their internal self-worth on not being black.

Just about everyone I've ever met from Europe, Asia, or Africa is astonished by America's obsession with race.

Peter Ustinov, the famous actor, used to tell a story about being asked what color he was by customs officials on his first trip to the US and he told them "pink." You can imagine how that went down in the early 1950s.

"Pink" was always my answer for my students as well, since my skin tone is distinctly pink. Pink and brown don't sound as far apart as black and white do.
