Believing you are a leader in "the one true church" can make you truly arrogant.

His letter resonates with me as it mirrors my own experience.

He's not still a member. He wasn't even a member 6 years ago when this article was published. He was a member when the bishop sent him the first letter, but he fixed that by resigning [actually, the more verbose and victorian-sounding "I hereby withdraw my consent to being treated as a member", but that got the job done]

Not sure why you put "he's still a member" in the subject line. My first reaction was 'did they not let him resign?' I suppose it is a case of First-draftitis. I've done that more than a few times myself.
