If those of us who still have some participation in the church (because of spouses or other reasons) were to start a rumor. The idea that people leave the church in droves because they are offended is basically an anti-Mormon sentiment when you think about it. I've said this a dozen times before but it's basically saying that the person accusing others of leaving because they are offended has no trouble believing someone would rather spend eternity in hell than a few hours in church next to a TBM. That active Mormons really believe the members of the church are so awful they can offend badly enough to turn people against God. That Mormon doctrine fails the majority of those who join the church by giving them an emotional maturity level of a 12 year old prone to snit fits and tantrums. That Mormons are such offensive people and they admit it - yea, they brag about it. So why don't we start a rumor that this teaching was started by anti-Mormon groups, trying to undermine the church? We can explain how non-LDS, hearing this rumor, tend to think Mormons must be terribly offensive people if they brag about how many people they offend. We can tell them that anti-Mormons have less success influencing people than Mormons do (little white lie) so they've tried to find ways to get Mormons to bad-mouth Mormonism by getting them to spread this rumor. Church members are suspicious of a lot of us anyway, knowing we have issues with the church. They'd totally believe we were talking to anti-Mormons or reading anti-Mormon websites. We could act like spies, letting Mormons know what "the other side" is up to and act like we are doing them a favor by telling them ... so they can take steps to fight this anti-Mormon lie.

The way stories spread like wildfire - the fact Mormons are way gullible - the tenuous position we hold... I think we could pull it off and stop this particular character assassination in it's tracks.
