She'd be a lot happier going to a site like Pinup Girl Clothing, not to mention wearing the right underthings so that her dress didn't bulge and bump around her tummy...but neither of those would work with garments, unfortunately.
"Color Me Beautiful"..... i am sure i had that at ZCMI or Crossroads(i used to market them in malls and convention centers).... for all the uninitiated... CMB is a "system" to color coordinate YOU!! :)

She's not really ugly, just very badly done...she needs an outfit in blue or green to emphasize her creamy skin and make her red hair pop. She also needs a cute haircut with bangs that de-emphisizes her forehead(and softer...bone straight hair looks harsh on her), and makeup that isn't dark close to her nose, making her look squinty and cross-eyed, less blush on the apples of her cheeks, and a lipstick color that looks good on her, not trying to look good with the dress.
I'm over here planning a whole retro makeover, aren't I?

I think you nailed it. Her look is monochromatic (the dress color is too close to the skin color) and nothing pops. That pretty red hair and creamy skin are assets that are not taken advantage of.
When the original post mentioned a Utah look I was expecting a gunnysack dress or denim jumper. Maybe I'm missing something here.
I see a lot of the young upper middle class moms going for this sort of early 60's retro look right now, whether they know that's what it is or not. Bump-it's everywhere.
Sad thing is, if you don't know what you're borrowing from, you have no idea how to tweak it to suit you, not the other way around...
When I first saw the title of the blog - 'Thread Ethic' - I thought maybe it was ethically sourced clothing - organic, no sweatshop, fair-trade or whatever. But no, to them ethic is modesty.
"Welcome to Thread Ethic; where modesty thrives in style."

I agree in all but the "look" she is wearing on her face. It "looks" like she got into some bad funeral potatoes or her Diet Caffine-free Coke didn't sit well.
Maybe it was the carrot-&-pineapple-fortified green J-ELLO?
Her expression says to me, "Holy frick, just look at how good this daughter in Zion is presenting herself." "I'm looking good enough to walk into a temple without the toga and veil!"
Personally, I like seeing this style come back. I gave all my 50's and 60s wardrobe away many years ago. Now days, with all these styles coming back, I wish I still had it! Wouldn't fit me, but it would fit my grand daughters.... or it would sell for a lot of bucks in a Consignment Store!
Her forehead is too big for the "bump." She needs to have bangs to cover it and it does look like she's sneering. That colour would suit a brunette much more; She needs to be in something warm-toned AND colourful.
For me this definitely doesn't epitomise the utah look. This is moderately decent. Coming from England, when I went to SLC I was so disgusted; rhinestone jeans, jeans with tennis shoes? Layered t-shirts, the list goes on...
jeans with tennis shoes i wear that ALL the time..... when i went to Europe in the 70's..i coulda paid for my trip if i had brought extra jeans!! no lie!!
Is she blind? She looks like she has that 'Where the hell am I? someone tell me where I am' look that many of my blind friends had and I have from time to time. You never enphasise that look on a person with an eye condition it just gives them more problems.
I LOATHE those skinny, pencil-skirts and I can't walk in them. Of course, I don't have the figure to pull off that sort of dress either, so maybe it's sour grapes -- but I kind of like the hippie 3/5 length tie-dyed stuff. (Or not tie-dyed but still light and airy and swishy when you walk.) Clothes should be fun, I think. :)
The skin tone colors are very popular right now, as are fabric flowers.
I'm okay with the dress style and the color. The shoes are wrong, new style pumps would be better.
And she could brighten her pale skin tone with bright colored accessories especially something around her neck.
She needs a different hair cut. Bangs in front, shoulder length on sides. She has pretty eyes. Make-up wise she needs to emphasize her eyes and minimize her flaring nares.

Check out the rest of the site, the FLDS won't want THOSE models! :-)
Do they do it other places? My TBM daughter wears her bangs that way (I'm hoping she is just trying to grow them out). My daughter looks so "severe"--and she is very pretty. Ever since she went MORMON, my daughter looks so much different. AND I hate this look for bangs.
...are the pretty Latinas with shiny black straight hair in Yuma, AZ. I tried it one night (and I'm only part Latina, keep in mind, with curly hair) and I ended up looking like an alien.
