http://bleacherreport.com/articles/855046-byu-football-crushed-by-utah-could-even-more-unthinkable-happen

Quote from the article:

Similarly there are those in the leadership of the church that question the religions flagship university’s role in providing players for the NFL, which is primarily a Sunday event league. After all doesn’t BYU have a strict policy in place about not playing on Sunday?

Isn’t part of the debate of BYU going to a BCS league center around the school's inability to play on Sunday?

I think the overwhelming number of college games are played on Saturday...

Football is understood by most large schools to be a HUGE money-maker...

In the case of Steve Young, it was also a bit precursor to a tithing & PR wealth.

think to yrself how much S.Y. paid in tithing over his career (now he's ? still working in the football industry?)

quitting football because of Sunday? not gonna happen.

A "superconference" will want BYU to play basketball on Sundays as TV schedules demand it. This "superconference" would also want BYU to play Olympic sports and baseball on Sundays to lower travel costs.

If BYU drops football, they could add ice hockey and soccer. A BYU Ice hockey team could play exhibitions in eastern Europe and soccer could play pretty much anywhere in the world.

If BYU drops football it would prove the church is not as mainstream as they try to claim. Droppping football because some players graduate to the NFL is stupid. Professional Swimmers, baseball, basketball, & track athletes play on Sunday. Should BYU remove all sports and become a convent? Drs and nurses also work on Sunday so I guess they should close the med school.

It's a tradition, a long one. Just because they get beat sometimes, and are no longer in the Mt. West Conf. they won't drop football. They would have to close the whole school first.

When I was at BYU some of my liberal arts professors suggested BYU drop football for a few reasons.
1) Subsidizing the feeder pool for professional leagues.
2) The proud and partisan competition that results. It isn't very Christlike, especially how passionate and tied up with things some fans get. eg Spiritual rivalry between Utes and Cougars.
3) BYU sucks at Football and is unwilling to pay the price to get a top notch team. So why go half-assed. Better to back out and just go to an intramural style sport.
