This was an element of the novel Advise and Consent, by Allen Drury, first published in 1959. A movie was made in 1962 with this plot element largely intact.

I found it fascinating many years ago and wondered how many on the board had seen/read it.

The greater story is a potboiler about political machinations on the eve of a contentious nomination for the Secretary of State.

I'm wondering how Drury came up with the character of "Brigham Anderson".

Any insights?

I saw it on TCM a few years back during a gay film festival they were running. The festival wasn't just about positive portrayals of gays in cinema, but more of a historical review.

I was really surprised that the Brigham Anderson storyline was even in the film, given that it was released in 1962.

There's a scene about 2/3 through the movie when Brigham Anderson comes home to his wife and takes his shirt off--no garmies!

Was he a secret exMo? Hmmm...
