Whenever a Mormon claims the LDS church is NOT a cult, I'd be really curious to know what their definition of a cult really is. Anyone ever have this discussion with a Mormon?

Spoken to my tbm gf about this recently. She seems to think that because the church "isn't doing any harm to anyone" it's not a cult. I guess u can't expect someone who's In a cult to realize their situation, otherwise cults wouldn't exist.

A great follow up question to ask your tbm gf would be "Do you think people who are a part of a cult think it is doing harm?"

Wow. I never thought about asking a TMB that question! Thank you!

Back in high school, when we were studying the evils of communism, I realized it had a lot in common with the United Order. I asked Dad. He said, yes they're similar but that the church's version was good because, well it was the church's version.

I learned about propaganda, censorship, thought control, suppression of dissent, etc. I brought it up in seminary, how the church did things that looked like that. The teacher said that it was different with the church, because the church is true.

And so it goes.

I saw a post on facebook recently that said something like, "I don't know why people are saying we are a cult! We are not a cult! We are Christians who believe in Jesus Christ!" Apparently just the fact that you believe in Jesus makes your religion not a cult...

Because a number of cults use Jesus as a front man. Especially when a Mormon says "We have the words Jesus Christ right in our name."

So do the FLDS.

Yeah I've seen these posts going around facebook as well. Of course they don't want to believe they are in a cult. They believe that they belong to the true church.

By that measure, the old German Democratic Republic *must* be a Democracy ("Democracy is our middle name").

That would be news to the thousands who fled (and hundreds who died in the attempt to flee) East Germany.
