Hey all,

I need a copy of my church records, mostly for the baptism records, for VA education benefits purposes. But I recently moved to a very rural place. Not much in the way of wards here. Plus, I don't wanna start the "love bombs" by advertising my presence to local mormons, if there are any, lol.

Is there another way I can get a copy of the records? Like through correspondence? I was thinking of just getting a P.O. box. That way I don't get them coming to my house or anything.

What about an electronic copy like a scanned jpeg that could be emailed to you or the intended recipient...would that work?

That would work, I just need to know how I could get one?

The mormon church assumes ownership and total control of its records.

Many are non-religious, would not have any church record for a government benefit, nor any other reason. Just wondering why VA wants a religious record document.

Well, they want proof that I was my father's dependent as a minor. And they said a baptism record, or church record would do, because it states your legal guardians from that time.

I suppose there are other kinds of records they might take, but I've moved around so much, and lost so much in the process, I just don't have any other records from when I was a minor.

Church record would be the fastest and easiest record for me to get.

Melissa,
If you need this for a gov't benefit, use a birth certificate.

All you need is certified copy of your birth certificate. There is a fee. It is reasonable. An agency called Vital Chek sent me 2 copies for a passport within 2 days. MUCH faster than running down religious records that are probably not certified documents.

Government agencies use Vital Chek.Your parents are listed on your birth cert.

Frankly, I am surprised a government agency would want an LDS baptism record, or any pick your church record. Maybe you need to check the documented requirements for the benefits you seek.
Good luck!

edit to say: If your parents divorced, you could also get the divorce decree, which is public record. Most everything is done online. I also reside in a rural place.

They are VERY good at that.

So with that being said, you may as well just request them.
