I'm re-reading "Harry Potter" (getting over flu, need light amusement) - What does it mean, "Taking the mickey?" I simply CANNOT figure it out from the context.

Thanks, everyone. Didn't know who else to ask, at this hour!

To tease, mock, or ridicule. And Google is usually a good place to start.

Pista is correct

also known as 'Taking the mick' or 'Taking the michael' and is related to cockney rhyming slang
'taking the piss' (meaning to ridicule) - piss = Mickey Bliss
hence 'taking the mickey'

then I might not have learned that bit about Cockney rhyming slang, (which drives me up the wall anyway, because I don't usually understand it - two great nations separated by a common language and all that.)

I've heard the expression "taking the piss" before; I'm pretty sure it was in a movie. Now it's going to bug me until I can think of which movie!

Thanks, guys. RfM is a veritable fountain of information, and more fun than Google!
