When I was growing up, in the 50's and 60's, my inactive father would always say; "One thing about the mormon church, they always take care their own." that has not been my experience. I was off work for two years one time due to an injury. During that time, I needed to ask for some financial help. Here is the way that conversation went;
Me: as you know, bishop, I have not been working for over a year, and we have been doing fine, but there are some things I am getting behind on, and we could really use some help, if that would be possible.
Bishop: I know of your situation, and I feel prompted to ask you a question, do you own more than one TV?
Me: Yes I do.
Bishop: well I think you should consider selling your extra TV's, also, if you own more than one car, you should considering selling your second car.
Me: I will try to do that, I'm not sure how much I could get for a used TV, will I be able to get some help then?
Bishop: Has your wife been looking for a job? If she could work, she should.
Me: My wife has no training, and could only find a minimum wage job, so she wouldn't bring in enough, and if I sell the second car, how would she get to work?
bishop: Pray about it. These are things you should be working on, when you change the way you are doing things, come back and see me next month and we can review your situation.

So I see tscc will always take care of their own, if their own can give up all of those luxuries in life and live a life of humble obedience, they will always help you.

I have related this before.... I was unemployed on two occasions in the late 80's and very early 90's.... both times it became serious enough that I turned to the church for help
first time round, the bishop took me on as a casual labourer (he was an independent contractor)... I am very grateful for that and I did get a ward Christmas hamper that year.

the second time round, it was a different bishop. I was flat broke and could barely afford the petrol for all the ward positions and meetings, let alone anything else.
The bishop told me to beg or borrow money from my own family. no financial help. no food aid. not even any help with ward positions.

so, if someone claims 'tscc will always take care of their own' I say "Hmm...... not so much"

What is the situation in most wards with the recession? How many families have lost their homes and would I wonder how much has been paid in tithes through a lifetime to be told "The Church can't help you"...

This was one of my first clues that TSCC isn't true. I had recently been called as exec sec, and I found out in a meeting what people have to do to qualify for aid. I always thought it was freely given to those in need, but found that you have to sell just about everything you own (even things that would help you get back on your feet, like perfectly good running cars), cable connection, Internet (can't have them surfing porn instead of looking for a job!), subscriptions and memberships of all kinds...anything that isn't absolutely essential in order to keep breathing. THEN you have to ask your family for help. And of course pay at least 10% of money that you don't have... and THEN we can talk about helping you. When I voiced my concern about it, the bish told me that the church is here to "support life - not lifestyle". This was the first chink in my TBM armor that allowed me to listen to my wife, who had already figured things out...

My cousin joined the morg in the late 70s/ early 80s and I know that he was helped by the church when he was unemployed in the mid 80s. It was one thing his mother commented on about the morg.

However I think that those days are over -- the morg is like a trophy wife-- it has become accustomed to a certain lifestyle and can't go back. With the economy down and tithing down the church can't afford its lifestyle and help its members. So screw the members. The emphasis on tithing is reprehensible. No other church demands so much and gives so little.

The GA would be appalled if they had to work with the rules that govern other churches, Like financial accountability and the members deciding how THEIR money is spent. Not to mention paying for trained clergy and paying for cleaners for the church.

The morg called the Catholic church the great whore but the Catholics support far more charitable causes than do the morg. The morg is more the great pimp -- they screw over their members for their time and bodies and souls AND then take all their money. The morg gets them addicted from birth and uses the drug of the eternal family to keep them working on their backs. The morg is so money obsessed that it is amazing that the sheeple can't figure it out.

So what exactly does the church do with all its riches then?

I know this is not news to most of you, but I can't help but point out that my church takes in way under 10% of members' incomes (a lot of congregants are seniors or struggling families) and yet we manage to pay a professional pastor (with divinity degrees and everything!), a janitor, a secretary, maintain a rather large church and its grounds, and gift thousands of dollars a year to charity. And the budget is pinned to the wall where everyone can see it, every penny is accounted for and anyone is welcome to join the budget committee.

What a concept.

I hope you "prayed about it" and the answer was to just keep your money and take care of you and yours.
