Things like "Got Jesus?" and "Real men love Jesus", and even "Many of those who count on finding God at the eleventh hour die at 10:30". I've always lumped such people together with those who have a half dozen American flag decals on their car, and who chant "USA! USA!", but have never served in uniform.

What is the point of being so overtly religious and/or patriotic when there's so very little real substance supporting it underneath?

That's a question that's always puzzled me, but I think I may have an answer for it.

I believe it is a form of elitism for people who really have no other way to claim they are better than others.

Mormons are definitely in this category. Their "we are the only correct church, only WE have the whole truth" approach to religiosity is a sure elitist approach, for people who are not for the most part wealthy, or society's winners.

Likewise with the hyper-religious of other denominations. The fish magnets and flag lapel pins are a way for those without much else positive in their lives to be members of a "club" that allows them to be a bit arrogant on a daily basis.

it's sad when you think about it. How empty must your life be to need validation in this way?

I think you hit the nail on the head.

I also think the above is why so many bishops and SP's are such arrogant asshats. It is the only power they have ever had, or ever will have, and they love to force their agenda on others. The more pain and drama the better. A little power over others, and they morph into their own little version of hell.

and indeed it may work for them. i just dont see any utility in religion myself... and to "scream" your affiliation from on high is a way to feel superior..imho!

I try to keep my distance from all such vehicles on the road. I mean, what kind of whack job from the lunatic fringe must be steering the Krazy Kar?

I have good friend who has inked up his legs, arms, hands and back with similar iconography.

At Costco the other night there was a beat up van that had these stickers all over them, but one in particular stood out at me: John 3:16. Only someone had taken a black marker and written "murdered" over "gave". If that sticker had a like button I would have clicked it...

Which, being in California, is rather unusual.

...of a scaffolding company truck.

You couldn't tell it was a scaffolding co. from the back, so I thought that was pretty good. :-)

I saw a truck the other day "festooned" with Darwin stickers eating a fish symbol.

I know a family whose van is like that, and one sticker says: "Saying there are too many children in the world is like saying there are too many flowers."

I immediately thought of weeds...

Oops, sorry.

This reply was meant for Kentish.

I thought it was pretty obvious. I'm not one to wear my faith on my sleeve, or on my car for that matter...but I think some of you need to get a life.

I tolerate the intolerance of the ultra-religious.

Sorry if that gets under your skin.

If you feel the need to comment on my post, I could make a good case for YOU needing to get a life.

Well, it is a discussion board.....but perhaps in your tolerance you might explain how a truck, festooned with anything, be it religious, anti-religious, political or whatever in any way directs intolerance at you? Perhaps its a form of reverse elitism.

...before I even got the the part about elitism, I was thinking it.

I think y'all oughta pitch in and have some plastic Moronis mass produced and then start attaching them to your dashboards for fun.

"because He lives
all fear is gone"

Seriously? It needs a third line:

...and delusion has replaced it.

(Can I get 10 points for bringing "delusion" into this thread?)

I suppose now would be a good time to mention that one time in Draper, I thought I saw the "General Conference" truck. The truck actually read "General Concrete" but thanks to the con opening and e ending in the second word, I instantly read it as conference.

Your first clue that it wasn't the General Conference truck should have been that it wasn't overflowing with bullshit. Then again, maybe you were upwind.

Reminds me of that old John Prine song, "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore."
