He's sort of on the far liberal side of Episcopalian thought. His ideas are why conservative and fundamentalist Christians think Episcopalianism is worthless. How can you get people to be good without fear and threats? What good is a religion that doesn't give you a step-by-step, straight-and-narrow path to Heaven? Where's the fire and brimstone, the total certainty and the right to condemn other people? Pfuh, what a waste of time.
Spong is one of my "heros" - he smashes taking the Bible literally, and speculates that Paul was gay.
God doesn't care if he's Episcopalian. But Spong does need to rethink his wardrobe - purple doesn't really work with charcoal. Plum, or maybe mulberry would be better, with a splash of mango, I think.
