Wentto stake conference tofday with my wife as Elder Scott was the GA addending. It was a good conference except for some contradictions. At the end Elder Scott was surrounded by about 6 nicely dressed security people to escort him out of the building. These were hired security people I was told from the local federal gov't.

This was interesting because Elder Scott talked about how close he is to Christ and the Lord and then has to have a band of security people to excort him out of the building. What happened to faith that the Lord's prophet would be protected by the Lord?

Just an observation. No trust in the local Priesthood to protect the Elder Scott.Has to bring in the hired help and I bet these guys carried heat too.

"local federal gov't" ?

did they:

speak into their shirt cuffs?

was there a chopper overhead?

was there an armored limo?

"attending"

sorry, but this is a tough one to swallow...

unless Decker lives nearby, that is...

i won't go so far as to say that i have no fear of death but... since deciding that 'i don't know' is the sum total of my metaphysical beliefs i just don't worry about death anymore

yet what would happen to scott if he took a bullet while speaking at a stake conference? instant martyr status (and all of the heaven stuff that he believes in)

same with the pope-mobile...

(it's almost like these guys know - even if only subconsciously - that they're full of it)

The last pope did get shot and apparently the Soviets were behind it because they didn't like his views on their presence in Poland. There is a need for the pope mobile. However, I doubt Elder Scott has that much influence although some disgruntled tithe payer might get upset.

thanks - i didn't know that

of course, it WAS 30 years ago...

so it seems 'religious leader' is still a significantly safer line of work than say quick-e-mart cashier

still thinks it's funny that they aren't all zen about the possibility of death...

Well, I don't think most people want to die religious or not. You must be young. The pope was shot about the same time as Reagan and Lennon. I remember it well.It was in 81 if I remember correctly.

sure - but reagan and lennon weren't peddling immortality - to me that's a significant detail

not saying religious leaders should have a deathwish - i just wonder about the interesting relationship between purported knowledge of the afterlife and level of confidence in the possibility of said afterlife

>(it's almost like these guys know - even if only >subconsciously - that they're full of it)

you mean like when Brigham Young suspended tithing as a economic counter measure for his heavy handed financial blunders with the trans continental rail road that crippled the Zion Utah economy ? ..... If tithing is a law of god then how can it be suspended ? Can Brigham suspend the law of gravity too....

SEcular Priest posts here from time to time. I don't think this is BS.

I'll let him decide if he wants to say what city he's in. But some cities are more dangerous than others. Maybe there had been a particular threat.

"Maybe there had been a particular threat"

yeah, that could be the case

but if this guy really meets monthly with J Crizzy himself then shouldn't he be all: 'come at me bro' about any threats - really, what better way to 'bear your testimony' that you know it's True (note the capital 't') then to be willing to very publicly die for it

not saying all religious leaders should be totally crazy or anything but... it'd be nice if at least one of them (in any religion) showed some balls about it...

especially the mormon leaders because they're so old that, really, what would they be giving up by checking-out just a shade early???

literally everything to gain and next to nothing to lose

I don't think any of the security people are from the Feds - they are all hired by the church and paid by the church.

That is correct. The church has their own security people

I wouldn't be surprised if he did have body guards. My uncle is a police captain and has been asked on several occasions to provide protection for GAs when they are in his area. There are pics of him with various morg big wigs.

Not sure why they need so much protection since they claim god will protect them until their missions on earth are fulfilled. DH just jokingly asked, "Shouldn't there be Lamanite spirits protecting them or whatever those lame stories say?" LOL

Then again, you know us crazies would love to take out one of the big 15...

Security people from the federal government ?

This sounds fishy.

President Oaks is a personal friend and former home teacher of a close friend of mine. He still comes and visits her family even though he is GA and when he shows up he has his security team with him. And this is deep in the heart of Utah County. I always found it amusing that he found it necessary to have armed guards (in business suits of course) to drop by and visit an old family friend.

I have a friend who has some real crazies in her ward. First counselor in the bishopric is an FBI agent. Always packs heat to church. He has instructed her and DH (higher up in stake) to hit the floor if he ever stands up and reaches for his gun.
