My oldest son broke the news via email that their unborn baby has trisomy 18. This is a devastating genetic disorder.

The testimony about this being part of god's plan has made me sick inside.

I am completely at a loss.

I am so sorry.... I do have a couple of questions..... is it the normal preliminary testing? Or is this further testing they did after the original testing was done and came back looking suspect?

I only ask because sometimes those preliminary tests *can* be wrong. Sometimes.

With that out of the way.. I am so sorry... earlier this year when we lost our pregnancy our testing came back positive for something else, but similar and I know how devastating and scary it can all be.

Hang in there. And if you need to talk... we are all here for you.

the results from the amniocenteses came back today. Is there any doubt after that test?

So I don't think there is any doubt after those... I was hoping maybe it was just a prelim...

Again I am so sorry your family is going through this. My thoughts will be with you guys. And like I said... we are here for you. ((hugs)) And there are a lot of support groups for families with children that have trisomy 18.... when they are up to it, and I am sure there doctors let them know, they should look into those. It will be a valuable asset to them and to you.

** Also... I know the first time we had positives on tests in our pregnancy we were in the church... I can't tell you how many times I hollowly said to myself that it was all part of a plan... and honestly I didn't believe it... I just thought it would make me feel better....

I'm so sorry to hear that. Devastating. My good friend's precious little boy was still born due to Trisomy 18 just last summer.

From what I am reading, many don't make it full term and if they do deliver alive, live a very short time.

My good friend who is a NICU nurse said if the baby is born alive to just hold him.

Very sorry to hear this, gemini, my thoughts are with you. Are you an n-th generation Mormon with a polygamous heritage? I read this article about the high incidence of trisomy-babies among that demographic:

Another sad consequence of the perversion that is Mormonism.

No polygamy in my family that I know of. Just luck of the draw, I guess.

They live far away from me but it sounds like they have a lot of support around them. That's good.
Thanks for the good thoughts, everyone.

That is a terrible shame.

But I bet you will still love your grandchild just as much.

I am so sorry to hear this. I have a son with trisomy 21 and next pregnancy the triple screen suggested high risk for Trisomy 18. He ended up not having the disorder but I did do a lot of research at that time.Hard news to absorb.

Sorry you are going through this and I agree the "God's plan" spin is sickning, but that belief might help the parents cope.

(Even as a TBM I never thought my son having trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) was part of God's plan. I thought is was part of the "shit happens" plan).

Ugh...

And although less than 10 percent survive to their first birthdays, some children with Trisomy 18 can enjoy many years of life with their families, reaching milestones and being involved with their community
wow those are stunning statistics! my thoughts and positive vibes(i dont pray) are with you!

A relative of mine had a Trisomy baby. Google S.O.F.T.

This group was and still is a big support.

I am so sorry for your pain and loss.
