I left the church decades ago, so, naturally, I haven't been actively, personally observing the subtle shifts in the church. So, when I was reading Pres. Paternoster's blog, and saw the tales he referenced from the Ensign, I was a little stunned.
It used to be that members would tell their little stories in F&T meeting or in class of how the Lord miraculously helped them through their financial problems because they always paid tithing first. And though we might be moved by the stories, it seemed the official line from the church was that although the scriptures promised blessings for paying tithes, it wasn't necessarily a straight financial exchange where you pay the Lord and he sends you money in return.
But now theseBS tithing stories are there in the church's official, GA-blessed magazine. It's now essentially doctrine that tithing brings financial reward. My how things have changed.
The church is taking a huge gamble here in the name of maintaining its revenue stream. A lot of members are going to be very upset when the money to pay the bills doesn't miraculously show up -- as promised by the Lord's Anointed.
