the temple the first time and received my name for the first time but I always thought That my name was from God? Can I laugh or cry at my previous stupidity?
And Mormon weddings were conducted outside of the temple for ver 40 years??? God changed His mind on weddings all of a sudden? This is a riot!

Yes, it's the name du jour, and of course they don't tell you that. Then they blame us for assuming it.... "we never said that!" There are a lot of names for men, but not too many women's names. Go figure.

BTW... I've enjoyed your posts. There's just something about seeing someone become enlightened. :-)

Best wishes, and take whatever time you need.

Everyone gets the same name for the entire day. That's why they can whisper it in your ear if you forget it.

They circulate through the names over and over - I've gotten the same name more than once. The funniest is Nimrod. For some weird reason every time it is Nimrod several men forget it and have to stand up to be told what it is.

I suspect they circulate through the women's names more quickly than the men's as there are a lot less names in the scripture to work from.

I've been to the temple hundreds of times. No one had to tell me directly - it's pretty clear when you are familiar enough with it.

I've also had plenty of close friends/family that have been temple workers where we have talked about this.

Again, at 3 places in the endowment ceremony you may have forgotten your name.
1) At the beginning they say if anyone has forgotten your new name please stand. If you stand you walk to the back of the room or out in the hallway and the temple worker whispers to you: "The name is X". Since they know what the name of the day is they can tell you what the name is.

2) When you give the promise never to revel the second token and swear on your new name you are again give the chance to stand if you have forgotten it. Again you go to the back of the room and have it whispered to you.

3) When you go through the vail you have to give the new name. If you don't remember what it is the temple worker whispers it to you - again it's the same name whispered for everyone one.

Also I've heard loud temple workers tell other people what their new name is and it's always the same as mine on the same day.

By the way the supposed doctrinal idea here is that it puts you in some kind of "priesthood group" on the other side. Which conflicts with the doctrine that the only priesthood group on the other side is patriarchal.

I've heard it from several temple workers including my father. Once while in the locker rooms a temple worker friend who was about to go help out asked another temple worker what the name was for that day.

They held up a god damn flashcard with mine on it. As I walked away, I looked back and saw them hold up the same exact flashcard to the next person.

Inspired my ass...

Someone told me that they give everyone who goes through the temple for their own endowments on a given day the same name. I went through the Los Angeles temple in the spring of 1990. My temple name is Lois. Every other woman who went through the temple for their own endowments that same day is also secret named Lois. That way, if I forgot my temple name, I could call up whomever and say "I took out my endowments in the LA temple on such-and-such day - what is my temple name?" and they could look it up. Actually, it's probably something that would have to be done inside the temple walls but that's basically how the system works.

The LA temple has probably had countless "Lois Days" since then.

My Temple/Mission prep instructor told us they were set by the date you went through the first time. So if you ever forgot your name, they could look up when you were endowed and tell you your name. In the temple of course.

As I recall, the instructor or one of his sons had done this.

he didn't mention the cycle/recycling of it all though. He might not have known that.

All you need to do is call the temple where you took out your own endowments and tell them what date you went through, and they will be able to tell you.

Another easy way to tell is that if your Real name is Thomas and your new name was Adam, then the new name for that day for everyone else was Thomas. The reason for this is to keep people from getting a new name that matches their own.

No one prepared me for the surprise of finding out that everyone had the same name on a particular day. So I asked,

"Has it a name?"

They answer, "It does."

"Will you give it to me?" I ask.

"I will through the veil..." Then a breathy whisper, "'Rumpelstilzchen.'"

What the hell? I almost got lightheaded to hear that all the guys were Rumplestilzchen on that day. Someones should a said something.

Actually it is always a Biblical or BoM name unless by some stroke of coincidence you are named the same. If you're named "Adam," and the name of the day is Adam, then they give you the day's back-up name.

Actually the back up names are Adam and Eve. LOL!

I started a list of temple names, Angelina, would you like to see it? I'll dig it up later.

Whenever i went to the temple and forgot the new name I wouldn't sweat it. i would just wait to got to the veil. someone always said it loud enough, and then i would use it since we all had the same one.
so much for being special in god's eyes. the church tries to make you feel special but they fuck up by using the one size fits all -- they're way too organized to let it be meaningful or personal. the temple is a money factory, and a red herring for the members.

Is Martha a name given out in the temple? A friend of mine thought that was the name given to her but can't remember for sure and I've never heard anyone else say they received it.

Soooo if everyone gets the same name on specific days --- how can your eternal companion pull you through the veil when the time comes. Wouldn't millions of people named "Martha" per say answer the call? HA

Well, that new name is only part of the different passwords you're suppose to remember. The first password is your first name. There are 4? in total and the third and fourth are the same one for everybody.
The second password is your new name.
But the first password (your name) can be be a problem if you were born a Catholic in Quebec before the 1980's. See, all girls start with Marie (Mary) and all boys with Joseph and it's followed by a name that would be considered in the English world as your middle name, then it is followed by the name that you use (which in English would be the equivalent of your first name). And the temple workers would not accept that my firs password should be my name (wich is placed 3rd in my full name). They insisted that my first name was Marie. So I know that I have the same passwords as my friend who went to the temple for the first time at the same time that I did.
Ex. my name (made up of course) could be Chantal Bourgeois but my full name be
Marie Aline Chantal Bourgeois
Marie (like all the girls)
Aline (in my case it would be my Godmother's name)
Chantal (the name I constantly use)
and of course Bourgeois my last-name or family name.

Complicated when you arrive at the temple? Yes of course ;)
Glad to be out? Yes of course ;) ;)

Add Thor to your list. That was my husband's.

Mine was Elizabeth. The easiest way to remember mine was to think of my slutty cousin, Liz, and how she had a major crush on my brother one summer.

After I got fooled into adding baphomet to the list, I wait for multiple people to shout out names.
I haven't heard a new female name in a very long time, and there were just enough for a full month plus a few extra, if I'm remembering correctly.

Don't have the list in front of me though. It's at home and I'm at work. :)

I only ever went through the temple sham once. Immediately afterwords I discovered the "new name" hoax. What a giant let-down! I was really bummed about it. That was back in 1975, and today can't remember what my temple name was to save my life, nor do I care.
(joking mode ON)But in resent years I've wondered why the church doesn't "sell" personalized temple names. Kinda like vanity license plates. Great source of new income!(joking mode OFF)

:-)

So if the names are the same on any given day, does my sister who was my escort when I went through the temple for the first and who went through the temple in proxy for some deceased person, know my new name.

In other words, do people who are going through for themselves the first time get the same name as the deceased person who is having their work done in proxy?

My super sacred name is Abigail.

I believe they pick different names for people going through for the first time.

My special name that God had selected just for me . . .

That would be LUCY. Both my ex and I had one of those "put it on the shelf moments" over this name.

My "ex" is "Abinidi."

I would love to see the list of all the names for women. My name was awful and is not something I ever want to be called by.

Never seen anyone post these on the board
Ziporah
Atarah
Bilhah
Dinah
Eunike
Nahor
Maakah

here's a long list of feminine biblical names:
http://www.20000-names.com/bible_names_female_biblical_names.htm

Those mo's aren't very creative when it comes to their temple.
