Does anyone know when tithing really came into effect in the church? Did JS start it? If so what was so significant about Lorenzo Snow's famous sermon on it then?

If there was no tithing in JS time, how did the church get any money? Just random donations from whoever JS could persude to part with the cash?

The Official Answer: http://institute.lds.org/manuals/doctrine-and-covenants-institute-student-manual/dc-in-111-119.asp

"The Prophet Joseph Smith received the revelation on tithing on 8 July 1838 at Far West, Missouri. The revelation came in response to the following question: “O Lord! Show unto thy servant how much thou requirest of the properties of thy people for a tithing.” ( History of the Church, 3:44.)"

What the LDS Church fails to tell us, however, is that Joseph Smith never intended for himself or any of his Apostles to be tithe payers. There wouldn't be much point either, to be honest, as their only source of income was other people's tithing!
