"Lemuel was the second son of Lehi and Sariah. He was a lot like his older brother Laman. He too, was stubborn and rebellious. Lemuel was jealous of his younger brother Nephi and was disobedient and spiteful to his parents. He did not believe in the righteous teachings of his father, Lehi. Lemuels example in The Book of Mormon teaches us what happens when we do not choose the right."

I need to go check my calendar to make sure its 2012, not pre-1978.

There's no two ways about it. The idea that skin color has something to do with righteousness is patently racist. Period.

As long as that's in the Book of Mormon, the church is promoting racist ideas.

Racism is in the Abrahamic doctrine. It's all about belonging to the chosen race. Patriarchal blessings affirm this division. Whites are of Ephraim (the chosen of Joseph's two sons) and Latin darks are of Mannaseh (the second chosen of Joseph).

Let's be rational about this. Black sisters have always been able to go to the temple. They have no "loss of priesthood" problem, right? Maybe they were too shy to ask for the blessings God was just waiting to give them.

So why haven't black people rushed to Utah to collect their blessings? Could it be that the Holy Ghost is white and is not whispering to them or burning their bosoms equally to white people?

Seriously, we white people have no clue. I thought I wasn't racist at all because I moved to Oakland to "live among them." I couldn't understand why the people in my apartment building weren't more friendly. After taking a class in racism awareness, I realize how I misinterpret EVERYTHING. Why should my neighbors be --what--grateful? that I deign to bless them with my white ass presence? Why should they want to live with someone who exudes white privilege AND is blind to the advantage it gives her.

Here's how I found out I walked around in white privilege. As a class exercise, we were told to make some unreasonable demands in an all-black environment (not hard to find here in Oakland). So I walked into a Pizza place that had a big screen tv showing football. There were less than 10 customers, all black and the service staff was all black. I asked for them to change the channel to CNN so I could watch the news, "because I don't like football." To my absolute astonishment, the manager came over and switched it without asking any of the customers--and none of the customers objected. It was emotional for me and I went home and cried. I didn't know this could happen in 2012.

Another exercise that opened my eyes: The hipsters who hang on the corner are always extremely polite to me. The senior one even directs the younger ones to make room "for the nice lady." I thought they were being polite to an older person. When I brought that up in class, I learned that I'm not old enough looking to get senior deference, rather I was experiencing white privilege. I am the most dangerous person on earth to a young black male. A well-spoken white woman makes a complaint about a black male and who's going to believe him? In history, black men have been killed for this. Whhhhaaaaat? Sweet Lord, I had no idea.

Yeah, racism is still alive in America and even we liberals are practicing it without knowing. Take a class- you will be amazed what you learn.

That's just the beginning, Anagrammy, When you say something it's you speaking, not your "race." Nobody says, "she's very articulate (for a white person)." White people don't instinctively hold their belongings closer when you enter the room. They don't take one look at you and assume they know a lot about your background, likes and dislikes, intelligence etc.

And hard-core Mormons don't assume you are descended from Cain.

Probably the most interesting post I have read on here since joining.

Mormonism hasn't ever existed outside its hierarchical system of 'order', it's a very competitive society.

Therefore, it's 'natural' that systems be put into place to determine peoples place in the pecking order, some performance-based, some purely discriminatory.

I used to think it was silly to think that mormons were racist. It wasn't until I was older I realized I thought that because it was never put to the test where I lived. As a child There wasn't a single person in my church and school that wasn't white. I never talked to or was around anyone who wasn't white until I was 17. What would I know about racism? Sexism was the demon in my world.
