I've always wondered about this--are there any stories of missionaries who have gone to a strange new land--and fell so in love with the place and the people that they refused to come back? I'm thinking more than one lonely young man has succumbed to the lures of a kindly young woman and a welcoming family and more relaxed country.

Happens all the time. I know half a dozen English girls who have married US missionaries that served in the area.

Perfect husband - RM *AND* a green card!

They often settle here though.

But how would anyone ever hear about it? The church would never admit it. The families sure wouldn't mention it.

My friend went to Central America as a missionary, came back home to be released, and was back on the plane within a week to seek his fortune in Central America.

He married his sweetie down there and lived there for a couple of years and eventualy moved back to the States.

His family was majorly PO-ed.

Provided they properly deal with the local immigration regulations.

Very few missionaries "refuse" to come home. If they really fell in love with the country they were in (or someone they met there), they would simply go back after they were released.

They only need to get "released" if they want to stay in the good graces of the church.

Many missionaries from my mission moved back to Arizona within a few months of ending their mission. Often to come back and marry someone they met on their mission. I imagine it would be very rare for a missionary to not go back home at least for a time at the end of their mission.

Hey! Where & when were/are you in AZ?
The reason I ask is that I think I accidentally turned a missionary a while back & have no way to contact him & see if I messed him up or helped him out.

Speaking from personal experience, there is no way I would ever have stayed in Germany, especially for a woman. The female personal grooming habits over there were just too different from here in the U.S. (They don't shave).
OTOH, if I had gone to Korea on my mission...
