Converts: Did you lose your real family history to "church family" history?

Today's item in my grab bag of pissed-off-ed-ness is that my family has a very solid american pioneer background, including clergy in another very "american" denomination, but the part of the family that split off into mormonism is all about handcarts and such, and seems to have adopted LDS ancestry above their own flesh & blood frontiersmen, even though there's 0% connection.

Don't know why I should be surprised, and I'm sure they've been necro-cultified in the Lord's washtub...
