Oh thank goodness, you were just talking about one of the numerous flaws with the actual book. I was worried you were going to tell us that they were no longer turning the play into a movie.
Made the Lamanites' skin black so they would not be enticing to the Nephites.
In ancient times there was no race-based slavery. A dark skin was not considered un-enticing.
However in Joseph Smith's day Black-African slavery was practiced. Blacks in America were considered at least a class below whites if not subhuman. White skin was considered right skin.
Interesting that this book, supposedly written around 600 B.C.E. mirrors attitudes and ideas that were common in Joseph Smith's day but not in 600 B.C.E.
This concept from the time of Joseph Smith being put anachronistically into the past occurs again in facsimile No. 3 of the Book of Abraham where JS labels the only black figure as a "servant." The figure, of course, is the Egyptian god Anubis.
