...how much the Mormons love tall walls, fences, and gates?

Temple Square has a huge wall around it.

Every DI and welfare center has gates that they lock after hours.

The distribution center has... a tall fence around it.

I know someone who works at Beehive Clothing and, yep, it's got gates and fences too. Other businesses in the area don't.

I'm surprised that all their meeting houses don't have fences too.

And have you ever noticed while shopping at DI that they have guys all over the place wearing suits, sunglasses, and earpieces? They have to make sure that no one steals any of their precious donated goods!

They sure do take themselves seriously.

I think all the security is just another way to let the masses know who is really in charge. I mean really, who in their right mind is going to break into the distribution center? Are they afraid someone is going to steal a Book of Mormon? That's stupid because they give them away all the time. There is nothing in there of value and yet they guard it relentlessly.

I never did notice that, but I live in Montana. It's probably similar to JW's windowless buildings. If you don't have windows nobody can throw rocks through them...if you have tall fences, it's harder to throw rocks through the windows.

Whatever the reason, the Mormon church has had a "siege mentality" pretty much since its beginning.

I think you made a very interesting observation!

My Grandpa always said that gates on the parking lots were a sign of the second coming. I've never heard that anywhere else.

Must be a US thing. Generally (here in NZ) there are no gates or walls. The chapel is plonked in the middle of a huge swathe of lawn, with a parking lot at the back or to one side.
