This has always made me wonder.

Mormons are supposed to be extremely opposed to Calvinism, right?

However, I see evidence of Calvinism all over the things I hear from Mormons. Success seems very much tied to being favored by god in Mormon culture.

Mitt Romney's complete unawareness of his own privilege is a prime example of this.

Let's see about that.

1. God's favored people establish His Church in America?
Mormons: check
Calvinists (Puritans): check

2. America is the new Promised Land?
Mormons: check
Calvinists (Puritans): check

3. You can tell a man's righteousness by his financial success?
Mormons: check
Calvinists (Puritans): check

4. Some people are among the Elect - others sons of perdition?
Mormons: check (if Patriarch says you are of Joseph's lineage)
Calvinists (Puritans): check (if you are predestined to be saved)

5. Legalistic, shun Christian symbols, biblical literalists?
Mormons: check
Calvinists (Puritans): check

6. Holy City for the Saints, ruled by God's Law?
Mormons: check (Nauvoo)
Calvinists (Puritans): check (Geneva)

7. Armed conflict with outsiders:
Mormons: check (Gentiles)
Calvinists (Puritans): check (Catholics, Anglicans)

Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Yes, it [Mormonism] is an afterclap
of Puritanism. But one would think that after this Father
Abraham could go no further."

The Calvinist Dutch in southern Alberta are very insular. They build and fund their own schools, do not routinely vaccinate their children against childhood diseases, routinely import girls directly from Holland to marry their young men. They are in our world but not of it. We also have Anabaptist groups up here, like Hutterites who live in colonies and farm huge tracts of land and old order Mennonites...
