I just read that the guys over at the cumorah project think that the dead people on the membership list (those from the "in transit file" that the church keeps on the books until they're 110 years old while in reality they kick the bucket at 70-75) should be subtracted from the total membership number BEFORE applying activity rates.

That means even fewer active members than I thought. I made this calculation (I won't bore you with the details):

Dead: 1.9 million (13%)
Lost: 5.4 million (37%)
Inactive: 3.0 million (21%)
Active: 4.1 million (29%)
=============================
Total: 14.4 million (100%)

Thanks be unto the Hinckster for building so many temples with them pretty lights, so the Mormons can maintain they are growing while in reality they are a pathetic little marginal cult.

They're now admitting that even with everybody who's on the books (maybe even the possibly dead ones you mention?), they still only had 6.1 million members in 2010!

that's the USA only claimed membership. The world total is the 14mil number.

The real US number is likely much lower, if you do like the OP and subtract the dead, inactive and lost. What do you have left, maybe 2mil in US?

...is that there's no one in the families of those dead people active enough in the church to even think about notifying the brethren that Granny has passed. So every dead person on the books represents the end of the LDS line in that clan. Hurray!

Dead people make good members. They can no longer do anything to embarrass the church.
