... that a major celebrity, who was a Church member, was
stashing away millions of dollars in foreign banks, while
declaring far LESS annual "increase" on his tithing papers?

If he were famous enough -- and had tithed a sufficient
amount of cash, stock, bonds, etc. to the Church -- would
those leaders be inclined to give his under-payments a
wink and a nod, and not ask to see all his old tax returns?

Just wondering...

In making this point, the network (on Lawrence O'Donnell's "Last Word" segment) noted that Mitt's high-earning father, George, paid the Mormon Church 19% in tithing over the years (which is more than Mitt has paid and at a higher tax rate than Mitt has paid).

Perhaps this has something to do with Mitt's stubborn reluctance to provide public examination of multiple-year tax returns of his?

Nah. :)

Mittler's church has taught him that secrecy rules all. He talks in circles just like the rest of the GAs do. You couldn't get a straight answer out of him no matter how hard you tried.
In a church where there is no fiscal responsibility, he figures that other people will act all Mormony and not ask.......WRONG MITTLER. We deserve to know.
Heaven can't even help us if Mittler wins. Pray continually that he doesn't if you pray for anything at all.

Here's an interesting theory on why Mitt Romney would choose to take such a big political hit by not releasing his tax returns.

2009, eh?

Well then, just to pull some figures out of the air --
let's say that this noted member made a 200 million from
investments, dividends, foreclosures, sales, stock shorts,
real estate transfers, copyrights, royalties, etc. ....

But -- that his "carried interest," deductions, losses,
currency devaluations, unrecoverable debts, etc. etc.
scored him a 210 million dollar adjustment, and that
he obtained a 10 million dollar refund on over-payment
of estimated taxes for the year 2009.

If he disclosed all of that, would the Mormon Church want
their 1/10th of his paltry 10 million dollar increase?
Or -- since the poor guy "lost" 210 million bucks, would
the LDS leaders overlook his failing to pay one million
in tithing for that unusual year?

Some such combination of no paid taxes, a large refund,
and a failure to report correctly to the Bishop, might
be enough to make any LDS politician hesitate in owning
up to his past tax manipulations.

Right?

So if that is the case- Mitt paying NO taxes in 2009- would the current President of the United States not have instant access to Mitts federal tax return?

So acting ethically, Obama could not comment on the actual documents should mitt opt not to release them, yet Obama would be privy to the truth.

This would actually be more than devastating news for Mitt. It would be more along the line of Rodney King riots with US cities burning kind off stuff. That information could change OWS to violence. It would also destroy the GOP for decades.

Personally I hope if that is the case it remains secret. It would draw more attention to the bastsh!t craziness of mitts religion.

Not under most circumstances.

And, if Obama ever did seek such access, there would be
a chance that somebody, somewhere, would document that
fact and later use it against him.

The more likely scenario would be that some very generalized
information leaks out of the IRS -- such as the fact that
Romney never had to pay a fine, or never had any major
problems uncovered during routine auditing.

I think that somebody has leaked the fact that the 2009
Romney tax returns have some problems -- but that could not
have come from the McCain campaign, which never received
the 2009 papers.

Word is out, that Romney would NOT have run in the primaries,
if he thought he would have to ever disclose the 2009 returns
data. If that is so, there is something unique about that
year --- the year that many of the ultra-rich were involved
in schemes to misuse Swiss banking accounts, etc.

I'd guess that The Brethren have a full copies of the guy's
tax info by now. If they haven't, then they'd better get on
the phone and put in the call...

Did McCain interview WMR for veep?

If WMR told McCain, THAT may be the reason McC selected S.P.

I LOVE Sarah Palin!

I would never think that Obama would personally be looking up tax records, but if someone in the office were to share privvy info, it could be a real game changer.

All that would have to be done is having a sympathetic left leaning reporter (or anyone on camera) ask mitt how much he paid in taxes in 2009. Alot like asking McCain how may houses he owns.

It would be a lot more powerful if Obama asked him that question directly during the debates. It would push national attention on the fact that many of these people did not pay taxes, while the main running platform is lowering taxes. WTF

The scenario of not paying any taxes in 2009 sounds the most plausable. If that were the case, Mitt would not only nail his political coffin shut, but would be so damaging to the GOP that it could change the whole coattail factor.

Going to be interesting......
