I have often wondered how was the "revelation" in 1978 opening the priesthood to all male regardless of race or skin color received in South Africa which at that time was still an apartheid country.
Does anyone here know anything about the reactions of mormons in South Africa in 1978?
Are there any articles on this issue?

Not alot info nor details here but: "... some mormons left the church or moved to whiter neighborhoods or even countries."

Would be nice to hear more detailed stories.

I served there a few years ago and heard several stories about masses leaving when the "revelation" was made official. The Dutch Reformed Church allowed Africans into the clergy before we did so there was a large movement from there into the church, then when we also allowed it they left us just as quickly. I served in several places that had hundreds of names on the roles but attendance was in the teens. Most of the names were leftovers from that exodus.

There was a growth boom (at least on the books) in Brazil, but they were having a hard time finding enough men "worthy" of the priesthood in order to run the stakes and wards because of how widely African ancestry was spread in the country. Meanwhile, evangelical Christians were swooping in on Africa, a market ChurchCo had excluded itself from.

I know in the UK some strong (prior to the "revelation" that is) families left the churh and some of the remaining ones would not accept bread and water if the deacon was black boy.
But majority had no problems and many were really happy about the change of doctrine.

Hi,
Just wondering if you know any members from the Winchester ward (Portsmouth Stake).

It always appears to be 50% South African (actually it's probably less now that a few have moved to the US or back to SA)

:)
