So I've been thinking about a quiz about Mormon history that could potential get the cog dis spinning for TBMs and maybe even induce some of them to do some research. (I've seen Packhams quiz and it's sort of the same idea, but simplified.)

The format I've chosen is to purposely avoid providing the answers.

I'm trying to limit it to the best 10 questions that would induce a TBM to do some research.

Here's what I've come up with so far. Comments appreciated:

1) How many times was Joseph Smith convicted in court?

2) After the incident with the lost 116 pages of manuscript when the Urim & Thummim was reportedly taken by Moroni, what did Joseph Smith use to translate the Book of Mormon?

3) According to Joseph Smith history the first vision occurred in 1821o. What is the earliest year for which documentation exists of an account of Joseph Smith telling someone else about the first vision?

4) How many teenage girls did Joseph Smith marry?

5) How many women did Jospeh Smith marry who were currently married to other men?

6) How many women did Joseph Smith marry while their husband was away serving a mission for the church?

7) How many members of the mob did Joseph Smith shoot before he was killed in Carthage jail?

8) What was the significance of Joseph Smith’s final words "Oh Lord, my God!”?

9) What are the origins of Masonry from which a significant portion of the temple endowment ceremony is copied?

10) What was the ratio of men to women in Utah when polygamy was practiced?

I've thought of a similar approach... If you want to debate this with me, you must prove a minimal knowledge level.

Have you actually found anyone willing to debate with you? I have only found one and we didn't get into things too far before we decided it was pointless to continue.

I've gotten as far as asking a few questions, then just left it there. They never bothered to follow up.

I think they're scared to address the subject with me. Suits me just fine.

Richard Packham beat you to it.

What level would most TBMs score?

Here are my answers (without looking anything up, off the top of my head). I'm doing this for fun to test my own knowledge:
1. I can think of 3
2. seer stone (which was in fact, a regular stone)
3. 1832
4. Like 5 to 10?
5. 11 (but he proposed to even more)
6. ?
7. 2
8. ?
9. 16th century britain? (not sure what you're asking)
10: I dunno, 1:1?

Also off the top of my head...

1. I can think of 3
- that's about what I was thinking - I don't know for sure. The most important one I think is the fraud charge for a seer stone

2. seer stone (which was in fact, a regular stone)
- don't forget in a hat

3. 1832

4. Like 5 to 10?
- see this:
http://www.mormoninfographics.com/2012/09/the-many-wives-of-joseph-smith.html
5. 11 (but he proposed to even more)
- 8 well documented and accepted by apologists, 11 according to Compton, possibly many more

6. ?
- 2

7. 2

- account vary 2-4. 4 seems the most likely. 2 is the claimed deaths which seems unlikely.

8. ?

- it is a Masonic distress call. He was hoping to get aid from members of the mob who were Masons.

9. 16th century britain? (not sure what you're asking)

- the important point is that once you research it, it is very clear that the Masonic symbols, signs & teachings COULD NOT have been handed down from Adam. They were clearly invented in the 1300-1600s date range - and the origins were not particularly on the up and up.

10: I dunno, 1:1?
- yep pretty close there are census figures pretty commonly found that dispels the myth that there was a shortage of men.

I have made a copy of that quiz. The next time the missionaries stop by they will be required to take it if they wish to come in.

On question 14, BY's "god the father" is Adam. Reword the answer to further point out the changing doctrine.

bc--

I think your first question immediately puts the quiz-taker on the defensive. Of course, later questions don't get any better--and I guess if you can get someone to take the quiz at all, they'd be willing to look into those things. I think that the second question is formed in such a way that it makes people scratch their heads: "Hmmm--good question! If the Urim and Thummim was taken, how exactly DID Joseph translate?!?"

Just my two cents.

I think you should rephrase this one:
"5) How many women did Jospeh Smith marry who were currently married to other men?"

I would make is one of those trick questions like:
"What was the name of JS's 4th wife's husband?"
When they say JS, you provide the name of her first and at the time still living hubby.

lol
