The Boy Scouts organization is far from done when it comes to being anti-gay. Even when individual troops within the Boy Scouts decide to NOT be anti-gay, leaders at the national level will not permit this offensive show of tolerance.

Coverage in Mother Jones:
http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/01/boy-scouts-threaten-kick-out-troop-who-supports-gay-members

"The Boy Scouts council in charge of overseeing scout programs in the Washington, DC-area is threatening to kick out a Maryland troop for posting a statement on its website declaring it won’t discriminate against gay scouts. The troop has to decide by tomorrow whether to remove the statement.

"In September, the families of Pack 442, which is based in Cloverly, Maryland (a small town less than 20 miles from the nation’s capital), anonymously voted and overwhelmingly approved to adopt a non-discrimination statement. According to Theresa Phillips, committee chair of Pack 442, the pack wanted Boy Scouts of America to know “we will not stand for the discrimination of homosexual minors or adults whatsoever.” …

"Update: Pack 442 took down its non-discrimination statement on Saturday after pressure from the National Capital Area Council, and will keep its charter as a result."

In another, related article about the Boy Scouts we find the organization losing funders over their anti-gay policies.

Excerpt below is from a Mother Jones article (http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/01/boy-scouts-verizon-protest-lgbt ).

… In the last six months, companies including UPS, United Way, the Merck Company Foundation and the Intel Foundation have announced they will drop or postpone funding for the Boy Scouts. Verizon Communications could be next: Over 70,000 people have signed a petition asking the corporation to stop funding the Scouts over their discriminatory policies….

Stop funding them.
Top Scout leaders will sing a different tune when they find their outrageous salaries threatened.

Of course the morg can always pay them with tithing money, so it's best to stop funding them too.

The LDS church has their own twist on Boy Scouts. Please do not confuse what BSA does and the Mormon Boy Scouts do. There are in fact athiests in our troop, even though it's sponsored by a local church.

The Family Research Council defends the anti-gay stance of the Boy Scouts using the old, often-disproved, excuse that pedophile = gay.

"What UPS and other corporations refuse to acknowledge is that the Scouts’ policy isn’t a matter of intolerance–but security. After hundreds of cases of child sex abuse plagued the organization, the BSA tried to create a membership criteria in the best interest of kids’ safety and parents’ rights. Over the years, the Boy Scouts have paid millions–possibly hundreds of millions–to boys victimized by same-sex predators. And the financial toll was nothing compared to the emotional trauma of these children, whose lives are forever scarred by those encounters. For more than 100 years, the Scouts have focused on instilling character and leadership into America’s boys. They aren’t about to compromise that mission just to placate liberal companies and activists."

we have coed Venture crew, and I am surrounded by teen age girls on campouts, two-week high adventure treks, and other trips.

by this logic, shouldn't I be forbidden from working with the girls because I too am a predator by definition and not able to stop myself?

This is exactly where I understand the BSA position is so offensive to gays. But then, isn't also the party line in kolobianism? Men are not expected to control themselves, it's up to the potential victims to remain modest so that men are never tempted.

Info from Southern Poverty Law group regarding anti-gay hate groups:

Excerpt: Public Advocate has claimed that permitting gay men to be Boy Scout leaders is “the same as being an accessory to the rape of hundreds of boys.” http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/news/splc-sues-anti-gay-hate-group-over-defilement-of-couple-s-engagement-photo

Excerpt: In 2000, the ADF [Alliance Defense Fund] helped defend the Boy Scouts of America's ban on openly gay scoutmasters, which was upheld by a narrow 5-4 majority of the U.S. Supreme Court. The ADF has also mounted legal challenges to gay military service, marriage, adoption and foster-parenting, as well as to domestic partner benefits around the nation.

It trains other attorneys "to battle the radical homosexual legal agenda" in free, week-long National Litigation Academies, whose participants commit to "provide 450 hours of pro bono legal work on behalf of the Body of Christ."

Another Excerpt: In 1992, LaHaye said gay activists "go after boys by becoming teachers and Boy Scout leaders." In 1998, CWA [Concerned Women for America] called homosexuals "people who make lewd phone calls, expose themselves to others, and engage in prostitution." http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-report/browse-all-issues/2005/spring/a-mighty-army

Here's an essay urging the Southern Poverty Law group to classify the Boy Scouts as a hate group:

http://floralpowder.newsvine.com/_news/2012/06/14/12227406-should-the-boy-scouts-be-labeled-as-a-hate-group-opinion

Excerpt: the BSA has made it clear that they are a heterosexual, Christian group and for those people only. Because of this, I think the Southern Poverty Law Center should officially categorize the BSA as a hate group on par with neo-Confederates, White Supremacists, those hate churches and the Black Panthers and other associated groups. How can one disagree? The facts are obvious. The BSA discriminates on the basis of religion and sexual orientation.

There's a poll at the link, so you can vote in an unscientific poll. Yes, it is an unscientific poll, but it would still be good for people to see that a lot of us disapprove of the anti-gay measures enough to call the anti-gay BS of the Boy Scouts "hate."

There was a story in Idaho Falls several years ago about a scout leader who molested several boots at a scout camp. The conservative Idaho Falls community (MORG) tried to cover up the incident the story was broke open by a reporter who was gay. After this happened Frank Vandersloot submitted full page ad to the post register which outed this reporter and thus changed the focus of this story. You know, because it's so much more scandalous to have sex with s same gendered consenting adult than to molest under aged boys.

That Vandersloot-funded billboard made national news:

Strange that the BSA won't allow gay leaders to work with boys, yet they allow women to be leaders. The threat of an older woman taking advantage of a young boy is just as great.
Also on the Mormon front, Since the church has come out and said that having gay feelings is ok as long as you don't act on it, should mean that the church should sponsor a BSA troop that contains all worthy males, and if they can't do that they shouldn't be supporting a BSA troop at all. The BSA is teaching hate and that does not help the mission of the church.

Because of this, I returned my Eagle badge a la eaglebadges.tumblr.com/ . This was harder for me to do than leaving Mormonism was.

They hate gays and they hate atheists. My son would love to be a scoutmaster, is a fantastic teacher, and knows a LOT about camping and outdoorsy stuff. But he is also openly atheist, so he can't be a scoutmaster. He has been told, "Just say that you were baptized as thus-and-such but aren't active now, and they'll let you in." But he feels that is dishonest and won't do it. It's BSA's loss.

But my ex, who abused me, abused our son, and was quite openly committing adultery before we were divorced, is a lord high muckety-muck at the National level and has received every honor scouting can bestow. GO FIGURE! If that's the kind of person BSA admires, they have lost my respect entirely.

If they Boy Scouts fail in their current form. And all the corporate money goes away. The LDS (AKA The Klan) church has plenty of money and will have no problem absorbing the BSA and putting it under LD$ family of companies. The Mo church has never passed up an opportunity for more income.
