BYU channel is now airing an episode about the bank of Kirkland even as I am writing this. It is part of the JS papers series. BYU professors/historians are claiming that JS was a victim in the whole thing. They are saying that JS withdrew from the banking board early and warned others to get out before it was too late. I'm not making this up. I'm watching it right now (while other family members are at sacrament meeting LOL). I know they are lying but I wish I knew more about the subject in order to converse with TBM's about it.

and apologetic plaster gets slapped everywhere.

even Bushman is pretty open on this. It was one of the reasons I started questioning more and more.

As for Bushman, he spoke to the subject on PBS's "The Mormons," saying "These things troubled Joseph so much that he had to do what he did."

What he did was skip town with Sidney Rigdon...

As for BYU, for crying out loud, he filled safety deposit boxes with rocks and covered them with silver coins and passed them off as collateral for banking operations...

And then when wildcat banks were outlawed, he had the notes stamped as the "Kirtland Anti-Banking Society" bills...

Welcome to the world of LDS revisionist history...

I'd like to see Steve Benson do an expose on this.

Even if Smith was innocent of any wrongdoing (which I doubt), why didn't God give him a revelation warning him that everything about the bank was wrong.

God was giving Smith revelations on all sorts of trivia elsewhere, why did God get the bank business wrong?

actually, Smith was giving revelations about the bank, saying it would become the most powerful bank in the world, and that all the initial investors would become rich, rich, rich.

You know, you typical MLM hype.

That wasn't the edit in my post; I fixed another minor typo, but I was feeling better because we actually had a half hour of sunlight here in SLC. and I wasn't my usual grumpy self...

Lots of Costco shoppers, that's all...
