I was wondering if these measurements of gold are historically valid names for gold measurements or if the Book of Mormon is the only reference for the use of these currencies:

"Now the reckoning is thus-a senine of gold, a seon of gold, a strum of gold, and a limnah of gold. (Alma 11:5)"

They are probably a more accurate measure of mormon stupidity.....

A limnah = believing the milk (convert stupidity)

A Strum = believing the meat (Now I'm invested in this stupidity)

A Seon = believing to the point of social disfunction outside of the church (why don't you want to join my church stupidity)

A Senine = believing to the point of social disfunction inside the church (god told me you are to be my next wife stupidity)

They sound to me more like Ikea product codes. My wife gave me a "Poang" chair for Christmas.

They also bring to mind that great Bill Cosby routine about God and Noah.

God: "Noah, thou salt make an ark"
Noah: "What's an ark?"

Haha. Ok, so I'm guessing they are made up words. Thanks!

Made up??

I'm sure that if you go over to the MAD-board, they'll be able to point out a handful of unrelated words in some arbitrary ancient near eastern languages that look a bit like BoM measures.

Don't know for sure but I would be willing to bet on it...

It is actually kind of comical when you think about it. Imagine coming up with your own words for things as you go and an actual group of people believing they are real words. That would be heady.

Pfffttt... it's ebonics, silly:

Limnah: living in the - as in "I tired uh limnah hotel!"

Strum: stir them - as in "I strum up wid sum hot sauce"

Seon: see them - as in "I seon ov air at duh bus stop."

Senine: see ten less one of something - as in "U senine 'o tin pohleese ov'rt duh donut shop?"

Actually, I was wondering the other day about the famous quote from JS' mother that he would "regale the family" with the most "amusing recitals" about the "ancient inhabitants of this continent" and "their mode of traveling, and the animals upon which they rode; their cities, ..."

Did he say they had cureloms and cumoms and chariots and senines, seons, etc.? Wouldn't it be a tasty treat if she remembered that stuff in her diary years before he wrote the BoM?

Fair wiki deals with it this way:

and a magic show and mentalist show and a fortune telling show and ...
Maybe they changed their last name and were really gypsies or as they are sometimes known, "travelers". The whole gypsy thing fits the family perfectly. Any trick to earn a dollar.

Yes. Yes they are real. Just ask the guys at FAIR who don't speak for the church whose opinions are theirs. If those opinions don't make them real then wherever shall we turn for truth? Sigh.

* or taken from another language, where they were made up.

If the question is, is there any evidence that any group of people anywhere actually used these words for weights or coinage, the answer is 'not so far, and don't hold your breath waiting'.
