My husband and I were just listening to an English group called 10cc and heard their song "Feel the Benefit" and were commenting on how inspirational that group - and that song - were. We thought we'd ask this board for some feedback on inspirational bands and songs YOU remember!

Jagger's theorem:

No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need.

Anything by Queen. I love Freddy, that man WAS inspiration (not saying his band wasn't any good, they were awesome, but Queen without Freddy is like a Lamanite with no Jewish DNA)

Any number of songs by Van Morrison and Cat Stevens.

And if you speak German, Herbert Grönemeyer's "Mensch" is fantastic as is his "Der Weg" (about the loss of his wife).

For fun, Wir Sind Helden's "Gekommen um zu Bleiben" is great as is the video.

Oh, and Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down"

But perhaps #1 is The Traveling Wilbury's "End of the Line."

Death? "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry

Heartbreak? "Dreaming With a Broken Heart" by John Mayer

I've always thought several of George Harrison's songs are pretty inspiring ...

Something
Here Comes the Sun
All Things Must Pass***
Beware of Darkness
Give Me Love
My Sweet Lord
Isn't it a pity
Handle with Care
End of the Line

Not a christian- but certainly a spiritual teacher.

"All Things"--did you mean the whole album? Cuz there's "Art of Dying" in there. Which I find very inspirational.

Informative about this group and posts that are considered responsive to "Rock" songs. Must have some Mormon training still that if it's not the Mo Tab it's of the Devil and Rock and Roll music. No skin off my nose, but check your genres.

I'll slip this one in as inspirational no doubt, probably more pop than rock, but certainly not country or female vocalist of the year. Thanks for the humor.

"Down To My Last" by Alter Bridge

And to the ones in which we sing,
We are honored you let us in
I remember the thoughts of many things,
Of the glory that you bring

I was never the right one to dare to dream,
It's funny what this life has done to me now
You were always the only,
To help me see there was a road I must find,
A road that was mine

But I'm down to my last,
I'm standing here alone
Looking back, on it all
But I'm down to my last,
I'm ready but I'm wrong,
And I'm blind to it all

And to the world to which we sing,
Want to try to do us in
I remember your name and I know your face
Can't forgive and can't erase

I was never the right one
To bear the weight of something fueled by words
I'd learn to hate
You were always the only
To help me see that to love is to shine
In your world, blind

But I'm down to my last
I'm standing here alone
Looking back on it all
But I'm down to my last
I'm ready but I'm wrong
And I'm right to it all

[solo]

But I'm down to my last
Well I'm ready but I'm wrong,
And I'm scared of it all

But I'm down to my last
I'm ready but I'm wrong
And I'm blind to it all
But I'm down to my last
And I'm ready but I'm wrong
And I'm blind to it all

My best was The Moody Blues. Almost anything they wrote.

"This Garden Universe vibrates complete,
Some would get a sound so sweet,
Vibrations reach on up to become light
Then through Gamma, out of sight,

Between the eyes and ears there lie,
the sounds of color, the light of a sigh,
and to hear the sun, what a thing to believe,
but Its all around if we could but perceive,

To know ultraviolet, infrared and x-rays,
beauty to find in so many ways
two notes of the chord, thats our full scope,
but to reach the chord that's our life's hope,

To name the chord is important to some,
so they give it a name, and the name is,

OM (In Search of the Lost Chord)

or;

Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
watch lights fade from every room,
exited people look back and lament,
another day's useless energy spent,

impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely men cry for love and has none,
A new mother picks up and suckles her son,
senior citizens wish they were young,

Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
takes this vision from our sight,
Red is grey, yellow is white,
but we decide which is right,
and which is an illusion.

(Days of Future Passed)

or

Listen to the sound, the child awakes,
Wander all around, the child awakes
Now, in this life, he never must be lost
no thought must decieve him,
in life, he must trust

Through the eyes of a child, you must come out and see
that your world's spinning round, and through life you must be
a small part of a hope of a love that exists
in the eyes of a child, you will see

look, so far away, new life awakes
Time, it has no day, new life awakes,
Here is your dream, and now how does it feel?
No words will go with you, and now what is real?

With the eyes of a child, you must come out and see,
that your world's spinning round and through life you will be
a small part of the hope of a love that exists
in the eyes of a child, you will see

Reprise:

I'm going to sit and watch a web, that you will build this day,
it is through a thread of love you weave,
it's yours to show the way.
and everything will be as you will see, in the light
through the eyes of a child you must come out and see
that your world's spinning round and through life you will be
a small part of the hope of a love that exists
in the eyes of a child, you can see.

(to our children's children's children)

Rearviewmirror - Pearl Jam

I took a drive today
Time to emancipate
I guess it was the beatings made me wise
But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize
I couldn't breathe, holdin' me down
Hand on my face, pushed to the ground
Empty Gaze, united by fear
Forced to endure what I could not forgive...
I seem to look away
Wounds in the mirror waved
It wasn't my surface most defiled
Head at your feet, fool to your crown
Fist on my plate, swallowed it down
Empty gaze, united by fear
Tried to endure what I could not forgive
Saw things
Saw things
Saw things
Saw things
Clearer
Clearer
Once you, were in my...
Rearview mirror...
I gather speed from you fucking with me
Once and for all I'm far away
I hardly believe, finally the shades... are raised...
Saw things so much clearer
Once you, once you...
Rearviewmirror...
Saw things so much clearer
Once you, once you...were in my
Rearviewmirror...

I Choose by The Offspring was great for me when I left the cult.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yxbXsQ5yCc

First verse:

Look at me I'm fallin'
Off of a cliff now
I can still hear my mama yelling No No No
But the words mean nothing
Can't catch up to me now
And the view is so beautiful
All the way down
When I was a little boy
Suckin' juice from a bottle
Believing my perceptions were oh so real
But I don't know nothing
Still knowing nothing
Was just enough for me to know the way I feel
This is life
What a fucked up thing we do
What a nightmare come true
Or a playground if we choose
And I choose
