John Paul II, with the help of his successor, Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) who was Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (aka The Inquisition) before he became Pope, purged the College of Cardinals of progressive thinkers. There are virtually only conservatives left.
