Or at least the inaccurate version of it most westerners think of.

There are only a few people I've known for whom I hold any ill will. They were awful people and/or they screwed me over.

I learned a while back that one of them had been caught defrauding his clients, and just before he was to be sentenced, he got run over by a car. I giggled for a week after finding out about that.

Today I learned another slimy, abusive, jerk has lost his largest client -- one that accounted for about 75% of his business. I don't wish his employees harm, but I'm so glad to see him get what he deserved.

This gives me greater understanding and appreciation for the Christian concept of a final judgment where all the bad guys who escaped punishment at the hands of humans will finally pay -- and pay terribly. Yeah, get those @ssholes! Oh, and reward us victims while you're at it, okay?

I figure if someone is a snake, they probably are going to repeat the behavior. Eventually the "fit will hit the shan" as a consequence. Sometimes karma is just the odds that they didn't get away with it every time.

I've come to accept that life isn't fair. There are going to be a lot of rewards and punishments that don't match the actions.

I'm glad I don't need a fantasy sky judge to make it all fair in the end but I can see why it appeals to people.

Karma just means work -- labor -- endeavor -- perhaps
also striving and desiring. In South Asian languages
it is about the same word as emotional love. It is the
attachment that binds us to our paychecks

But what about working for free? What about volunteerism,
or simply doing what seems best in a given situation?

I was hitch hiking through Nevada, on a day that you
could get serious burns through your Levis, just by
sitting down on the metal highway guard rail.

A guy in a car stopped. Took me all the way to Ogden.

When I tried to press a ten dollar bill into his hand,
he just said: "No need for that. Give somebody else a lift."

And so, when I got a vehicle of my own again, I did.
