I was raised fundamentalist Christian. If you've even seen "Jesus Camp," you have an idea of the crap I went through.

BUT

Before my mother went totally bonkers, we went to a black Baptist church that focused on love and social justice more than hellfire and brimstone (this was the '70s, yo). The music was *awesome*. I miss it. And then they introduced guitars and whatnot, and I guess my mother figured that electronic amplification was of the devil or something, and we went on Mom's Ever More Conservative (NO DANCING EVER!) Church Tour.

Meh.

If you could have *one* guitar god play when you were in church, who would it be?

I'm thinking Derek Trucks.

I was also struggling with Frusciante, Clapton or Gilmore. And Sunny War -- she's awesome.

And Joni Mitchell <-- Goddess

Scott I didn't get fired by my band, oh, I Did? Weiland lives here and so does Duff McKagan. I think they're buds or something.

And I totally missed the 4/20 Rage Against the Machine tribute thing because you guys distracted me. (Not really -- it's just too damned cold.)

Back to git-tarrs...

Derek is a great choice, Beth. :)

Derek, Clapton and the Dominoes will do me fine for some jump up for gawd music, thanks very much...

But I can listen to Jimi and Jeff forever.

I'd go with Stray Mutt for all the blues guitarists (add Joe Bonamassa to it).

Gilmour for my Floyd fix (listening to Live in Gdansk right now).

Jimi Hendrix and Blue Cheer for the oldies vibe.

Zakk Wyld and Slash for some current stuff.

I'd pay a lot of money to see him in concert haha any of you ghost seers wanna hook me up?

So many to choose from.

Has anyone mentioned Steve Howe or Joe Bonamassa?

I really dig this guy, mostly because he keeps things on-topic!

These are good.

But I would love to have George Harrison and Ravi Shankar show up at church and play. I would go back to church for that.

I think we'd all go back to church for that ... and I have lots of questions about the afterlife for both of them. :-)

Sister Rosetta Tharpe!

If I had attended a church where she played, I'd probably be a church goer!

"Sister Rosetta Tharpe (March 20, 1915 – October 9, 1973) was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and recording artist. A pioneer of 20th-century music, Tharpe attained great popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel recordings that were a mixture of spiritual lyrics and early rock and roll accompaniment. As the first recording artist to impact the music charts with spiritual recordings, Tharpe became the first superstar of gospel music and became known as "the original soul sister". She was an early influence on iconic figures such as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Johnny Cash.[2]" (from Wikipedia)

'Didn't It Rain' - recorded on a train station platform in Manchester, England in 1964.:

I love the old timey spirituals. The religious songs of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash make me feel the spirit like no other. They would definitely be in my celestial choir with Willie Nelson on lead guitar!

Eric Clapton and David Gilmore. And posthumously, Alvin Lee and Jimi Hendricks, with Janis Joplin as lead singer.

He's obscure, but he was Gordon Lightfoot's lead guitarist from around 1970 or so until about a year ago, when he died after a fairly short simultaneous failure of several vital organs.

Think of the Klaxon wail at the beginning of "The Wreck of the Edmund fitzgerald" (not my favorite Lightoot song, BTW) and you have Clements, but he did some great work with the mellower stuff and the faster, more technically dificult material. I think my favorite riff of his, which was not originally his but that of his predecessor, Red Shea, was the guitar interlude in "Sundown." It may have been Shea's originally, but Shea did not play it with the same soulful bluesiness that Clements did.
