Mr. Nelson's daughter was the wife of the Bishop of the ward I was in about two decades ago. She was one of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever known. So, if you can judge the kindness of a person from his children, he was a very good parent (or perhaps it all was due to her mom). Unfortunately, her husband was exactly like her dad, robotic, self-righteous,and inflexible in his

I noticed that as well. When I moved to Utah and throughout the time I lived there, the newspapers and television/radio stations would make the most tenuous connections between Utah and newsworthy items, stuff like :"Utah native's great grandstepson helps cure cancer;" "Utah scientists take part in climate change study." I do not belittle Utah scientists or scholars, but onl

If you scroll to the bottom of this page, you will see a map that changes over the years to show the increase in obesity around the country. It is interesting how it has generally spread from the south and midwest to the east and west coasts. The map stops at 2010, but I think in general the obesity epidemic has continued, but with some hints of it finally slowing down. http://www.cdc.gov/obe

When I first moved to Utah as a new convert from the Midwest almost 30 years ago, July 4th appeared to be a second-rate holiday in Utah. Everyone had the big celebrations on the 24th. Over the years, however, as Utahns became more Republican Fox-news watchers who desperately wanted one of their own to become president, the 4th has begun to eclipse the 24th, but just barely. Additionally, this

You know it's a cult when a clearly intelligent person like Ms. Kelly believes her marriage will be "lost" if she is excommunicated. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/58099754-78/kelly-church-women-lds.html.csp

If this were my son, I would be doing everything I could to get him committed. Obviously, he has some screws loose. Anyone who believes a refusal to eat food will change the mind of judges is not capable of being treated like a full adult. Though this is not a full-fledged hunger strike, it clearly imperils his health. Perhaps, behind the scenes, people are taking steps, but it seems like ever

It's called copyright infringement. People tend to forget that the actors, back-up singers, orchestra, stage crew, janitors, staff are paid by ticket sales, not youtube views. You are watching something for free that other people worked for and deserve to get money for. Perhaps that's the underlying reason for some hostility.

Lovely irony that Hawaii is the state that the church first started it's anti-gay campaign.

I recommend that you check out airbnb.com. I found a wonderful flat on that website last year for 40 euro a night. It was right by Old Street Station on the Underground and convenient to everything. I didn't think I had the time to go to Stonehenge or Bath, but I took the train down to Cambridge for a day so I could actually see some of the English countryside.

Articles like this remind me why I am so glad I now live in California instead of Utah. I no longer have to live around people like "Middle-aged Mormon Man" or have them determine my state's politics or culture. Utah should just be called "The Ostrich State" instead of "The Beehive State."

I understand that with some stores they waived rent for a number of years as an inducement. Thus, the Apple Store was persuaded to move from Gateway to the Lard's Mall. Money talks.

Well, BYU hasn't only had GAs over the last several years. Dick "Voldemort" Cheney spoke in 2007, but I guess it's about the same.

I remember reading manuals both for primary and young women back in the 90s and early 2000s for the classes that my ex wife taught and my daughters took. I recall reading those object lessons though, of course, I don't have any of those manuals now or any access to them. It was Gayle Ruzicka of Eagle Forum fame who claimed on that show to have never heard those examples. I am not going to say

Try this: Leaving the church, wife, and coming out (as gay) at 50. I consider this my second life. It is a very, very good one, with challenges, but enormous opportunities that I just need to take advantage of (like convincing my ex to remarry so the alimony goes away). I have been like the proverbial kid in a candy store for the past 3 years now. At whatever age you happen to be, you have

According to Wikipedia, the good professor was once a member of the Utah Legislature and a professor of Education at YBU. I am surprised by neither fact.

Yes, I came out as gay two years ago and two of my adult kids have excluded me. Two of them have refused to see or talk to me for a year and a half now though I do everything I can to keep in contact (they have told me not to text or call, but I send letters and still give them money). One other just started talking again six months ago.

The lighter the roast the more caffeine because the longer it is roasted the more caffeine is lost in the process. That's why Starbucks never gives me a buzz. By the time they are done roasting their beans, they are just making coffee from ash.

In about the same way that Americans switched from saying "yes" to saying "yeah." The language evolves toward minimalism. People texting "ya" today are no more lazy than the folks who first started saying "yeah" instead of "yes." I can guarantee that there were people saying that Americans who said "yeah" instead of "yes" wer

I grew up in the Midwest, not Mormon, surrounded by evangelicals and Catholics. Halloween was hardly every celebrated and even my mother would go for years without letting me trick or treat. When I came to Utah, I was amazed at what a big holiday it is. Except for the no masks rule and no trick or treating on Sunday rule, everything seems okay. The nightmare on 13th street stuff is alive and

I got through 10 seconds and realized that I just can't watch any of those people again, no matter what they are purportedly lip-syncing. The Star Wars version is the best of these anyway.
