Tonic immobility. Some think it's real, some don't. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I always felt my whole body go cold, my heart rate drop, heard a rush of white noise and then, gone. There is no way for me to even move when it hits. People who haven't been raped are lucky to not know the feeling.

I was raised with a litany of sexual abuse as well, and though our circumstances were different, the pain is there. That awful cold body freeze/nausea/ feeling of powerlessness still overwhelms me. When I gave myself full permission to hate my dad for the abuse, I ended up accidentally forgiving him. All that--hate, forgiveness, guilt, emotional repression--is yours to control now. Abuse

Not one of those--believe, obey, or endure--sounds the least bit exciting or inspiring. These girls don't get a chance to be young and carefree.

On the plus side, losing an extremely abusive father to the bishopric is a godsend. But because of that, I guess I never realized that people who WANTED to spend time with their dads must have hated losing them.

I guess I've been posting on and off since college. I hope my posts now are less angsty... I found RFM listed in the resource section of "Mormon America."( Apologies to those who have heard this before). I was 15 and I was so relieved by the term ex-mormon that I cried. I had never realized that THAT'S what I wanted to be.

It's definitely busier than when I found it 13 years ago. There was only one bulletin board at that time. I was 15 when I found it. Used to walk to the community college library to read it. Wow I feel old :)

yea...I dealt with a lot of sexual abuse. Martha Nibley's book, Leaving the Saints, talks about how many victims of sexual abuse came to her for support in Utah county.

yea, not only do they think the world looks at them with awe and wonder, they are also pushed to share the word o the Lord with you. My advice? Tell them you're Jewish.
