Perhaps "Mormon Enigma - Emma Hale Smith" would be too much of a leap for your wife at this point, but keep it in mind down the road a bit. My sister is one of the co-authors. Both Val and Linda were active, super-Mormon, women when they wrote the biography of Emma (both later left the church). Your wife may find the biography of Emma less threatening than a biography of Joseph, but h

When baking cornbread, use a can of creamed corn for part of the liquid ingredients. The cornbread will be very moist and have those bits of real corn in it. If someone wants the recipe I'll post it, I'm about to leave for dinner with my son and family.

My wife and I visited Cuba about 6 weeks ago. We were told it is illegal to export those classic cars out of Cuba. Also, they seldom if ever are sold. They are handed down within the original owner's family. Most of those classics now have Toyota diesel drive trains, since there have been no parts available due to our embargo. Want to see some photos of Cuba? Www.catgraphics.biz, then cl

I tried it once. Thought it was horrible. But then the only pumpkin flavored food I like is pumpkin pie. In anything else, pumpkin is horrible, IMHO. I thInk pumpkin is way overdone, but that's just my 2 cents. And Apricot beer is just as bad. Please, just give me a beer, period.

Mine comes direct deposit on the 4th Wednesday of the month. That schedule can be as much as a week different from month to month, depending on how the dates fall. My bank always releases the funds on the Tuesday before, since they have the funds, they don't wait until wednesday.

My wife and I attended the play in SLC last year. The vast majority of the attendees knew exactly what the play was about and the laughter throughout the play was an uproar. Sitting in the second row of the balcony we noticed several couples below us leave mid-play. There was a couple just in front of us who sat motionless, never laughed once that we could tell, but they didn't leave. From th

That was my story also, Randyj. Val never pressured me to leave. I remained active/semi-active for about 10 tears after ME was published, for all the reasons you succinctly stated. During that period, Val told me that if I had any questions or concerns about church history or doctrine, she wouldn't answer my questions, but she would provide all the source material she knew of so that I cou

Both authors eventually left the church based both on the information they uncovered and their treatment by high ranking church authorities whose only goal was to suppress and discredit. I've heard from many people over the years that Mormon Enigma was the catalyst for their own departure from the church. Like you, what I can't explain are those who have read it, and other accurate historical

Thank you Eric. Even though Val was what I would call a super TBM back in the mid 1980's, her goal in writing Mormon Enigma was to tell the true story no matter where that led. Certainly, her own research caused the cracks in her Mormon faith and I know it was a struggle for her to manage the coognitive dissonance that she was going through. In the end, truth can withstand scrutiny, but sh

Yes I've posted on here several times when Mormon Enigma pops up. Sometimes there has been misinformation, but mostly I would hope the readers of the forum find some of the background information interesting, coming from someone close to the author. Yes, he was certainly all of those other things. As to the disappearance of citations on church websites, that does not surprise me at all. The

She tried for some time before the book was published to just be a "back pew" Mormon, but that didn't work for her either. She already had such a dim view of Joseph Smith. After all of the research she did on he and Emma, she held the opinion that Joseph was just a conniving sexual predator using his religion as a cover for his deviant desires.

My sister was one of the authors. She was in the Stake RS Presidency when she started the research for the book. By the time it was published, she was mostly inactive, but still a member. If you recall, Dallin Oaks and Neal Maxwell went after the authors banning them from speaking in any church-sponsored meetings, activities, or firesides. They were insensed that two women members would publi

I haven't brewed any beers, but have brewed my own hard cider. It comes out very crisp, not like the overly sweet commercial ciders. The process is fairly simple, but takes 4 weeks to produce a batch. I use a 3 gal carboy for the fermentation cycle which makes 40 12-oz bottles. It's a stretch to make 40 bottles last a month until the next batch is ready. I've had some great hard ciders

One of my active, LDS cousins just passed away and his funeral was yesterday. He was dressed in temple robes minus the hat. At the end of the viewing before the funeral service, his active, oldest son put on the hat and tied it to his robe. This cousin was only about 5'5", and had a bit of an elfin look in real life. When the hat went on, he looked absolutely ridiculous, sort of like a

I agree, they should have refused to sign that. But the mentality of lifelong TBM's who have never questioned anything makes them ripe for this kind of ecclesiastical abuse. I guarantee they will not question any of this. So sad.

My wife and I have been inactive for years and finally resigned over a year ago. We still have family and friends who are active but have found ways to navigate that quagmire without offending too many while still standing our ground on occasion. Two things have happened recently that I'll share. First, we are close friends with an active couple. He was just recently called as bishop of the

Towards the end of the S L Tribune article: "The work was purchased for the museum by Jack and Mary Lois Wheatley, who also gifted Bloch's "Pool of Bethesda" and helped finance the museum's construction in 1993." I'm not defending the church here, but the facts are what they are. It was a donation by apparently very wealthy members, not an expenditure of tithing money.

Has there really been anything new by way of revelation in the last 30 years? Or more? The LDS Church is the master of recycling revelations and making you think its brand new and that its actually a revelation.

My wife and I booked a wine tour in the Russian River area through Platypus tours a couple of years ago. It was great, only 3 couples in a small van, and we visited small craft wineries. The locations weren't even set up until our guide talked to us before leaving and found out our wine preferences. We also toured on our own a couple of days through Napa to some of the larger well-known winerie

I started with a gallon also, but soon found out that 10 bottles didn't make it through the next brewing cycle. It takes four weeks to brew a batch, whether 1 gallon or 3 gallons. With 3 gallons of cider bottled, I can ration them through the next brewing cycle and not run out. Interesting addition that cinnamon. I've tried ginger juice, and that was good, but I was just guessing at the

Since I've aged (no, not fermented yet!) I have some issues with gout, so beer is mostly out of my diet of alcoholic beverages. My doctor suggested hard ciders. I tried a few that are out on the market and wasn't impressed because they were way too sweet. Might as well drink a Martinelli's. So, I became interested in home brewing hard ciders. With very little added sweeteners (about 1/2 cu

One of the authors of Mormon Enigma, Val Avery, was my sister. Both Val and Linda Newell were active LDS at the time they started the research into the biography in the mid-1970's. They spent at least 10 years researching, writing, and editing before the book was published in 1984. Shortly after the book was released, Oaks and Maxwell of the Q12 notified Val and Linda's respective Stake Pr

Helen Whitney produced the 4-hour documentary "The Mormons" which aired in 2007. While it was not the "expose" most ex-mormons wished for, it was was certainly the most comprehensive look at Mormons from an outsider's view to date. I would suspect that it is still available through some streaming service, perhaps directly from Frontline or PBS.org. I'm not sure another fi
