You've done well, Br. As I mentioned awhile back we were neighbors growing up, and your dad was regarded as the most ill-tempered jerk around, on his 3rd or 4th marriage at the time. I felt sorry for the nice woman he married last, as if she didn't know what she was getting herself into. Maybe I'm out of line to share this, though I can't imagine it coming as a shock to you. My dad was prob

Yes, but using logic will get you nowhere with Mormons, it's their inability to be objective, analytical or even reasonable that keeps them in the faith.

The Pre-Existence!(tm) is of one of the stupidest aspects of Mormons beliefs. I thought The Plan of Salvation!(tm) was the process by which God became God, and that he was just one in an infinite line of beings to achieve Godhood. But wait! It sounds like The Plan of Salvation!(tm) was just a hare-brained, half-assed idea by the most recent God, our very own Heavenly Father!(tm). So incomplet

Yup, it's that time of year. All the talks in church were about tithing, and the filler song when talks went short? "Because I have been given much, I too must give." It all sounds so desparate, extortiony, etc. to a non-believer.

I posted this in mini-rant in XYZ's thread, but thought I'd start it anew here, looking for doctrinal clarity or hilarity. In the midst of all the "legitimate rape" and "God wanted you to have that rape baby" business going on pre-election I told my wife, that as far as I knew, Mormon doctrine agreed with the God-intended rape-pregnancy line of thinking, as Mormon doctrine

In the midst of all the "legitimate rape" and "God wanted you to have that rape baby" business going on pre-election I told my wife, that as far as I knew, Mormon doctrine agreed with the God-intended rape-pregnancy line of thinking, as Mormon doctrine says that spirits are chosen/pre-determined specific to the bodies they will be born into. She gave me the "I'm offen

Yes, I'm sure it has a lot to with patriarchal bs. Even more recently when the bish was here at our house he asked me if I would approve/support her new calling. Me, the atheist anti-mormon being asked, lol. Now, I honestly don't think it's my place to be able to approve or not her church callings, but if they're going to let me weigh in, well...lol. I told him that if her new calling didn'

My wife is the primary bread winner in the family. A few months ago she started talking about catching up on her tithing (really? We're in debt -- fantastic.) so that she could attend her younger brother's temple wedding. This is her younger brother who once purposefully left out his journal where it could be found in which he wrote he struggled with same-sex attraction. He'd never had a ser

Okay -- I grew up a block east of where you lived in Alpine. Identity confirmed, lol. Does the name "Klondike Jack's" mean anything to you? :)

I totally dipped into the fast offerings I collected as a deacon. When taking in money at an event for a Scout fundraiser I also stuffed a lot of bills into my pants. Not that surprising, I guess, when you consider I went on a shoplifting spree (well, of candy and gum, anyway) right before I got baptized at 8 years of age, knowing I was about to be forgiven of my sins.

I had a SoCal college friend who said that he used to carpool to seminary with actor/skater Jason Lee. Seems like he'd have made the list if he grew up Mormon.

I used to write in "urination" and other such activities on the blue sheet. After a while I quit filling them out and no one bothered me about them.

My favorite funny film of all time. The fact that it was my favorite prior to serving a mission pretty much spelled out my chances of sticking with religion for more than another 8 or 9 years.

"...lifting the burdens of those who are struggling." What a crock of sh*t. A 10% extortion for typically nothing in return sure seems like a bassackwards way of lifting a burden.

John Hyde Jr., 1850 and something. I've really been enjoying Mr. Hyde's amazing book http://archive.org/stream/mormonismitslead00inhyde#page/310/mode/2up. It's taken 160 years, but Mr. Hyde's keen observations as one of the first disaffected Mormon intellectuals is on the brink of coming to pass (unlike any of the actual "prophecies" of the "prophets"),

My brother, who'd left the church over the course of the last year, was getting manipulated by his first long-term gf to get back into to get married. ***Status Alert!*** He broke up with her today, to my great relief. Thanks everyone.

I need some help for my brother's discussions with his girlfriend, lol. She's been giving him the line that you can pick and choose what you like to follow as a member. Time to bring the hammer down.

I wear my leather A&F flip flops for mandatory sac. meeting attendance in all but the worst weather. I always say "If they were good enough for Jesus, they're good enough for me." I hate wearing shoes -- Jesus sneakers are far more comfortable.

Not sure what your book has to say, but I found this article I read in Wired recently pretty fascinating. It says that talking about traumatic events can make it worse: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2012/02/ff_forgettingpill/all/1
