By Faith, I believe the velocity of light is around 186,000 miles per second, since I have no way (or even know how) to measure it myself. By Faith, I believe that Protons, Electrons, and Neutrons make up an Atom. I've never seen such things but I blindly trust whatever the scientists tell me. It makes sense to me. I never question a scientist's authority. By Faith, I believe the Univ

It is very possible that we will have another event to go to, so this whole thing won't be issue. It all depends on whether or not my son will be at a football tournament.

Actually they're very close friends... and we've gone to their church before. We've never been to a Baptism though. I'm pretty sure they're just being courteous. I have to admit that the Mormons around here are very respectful of the non-Mormons - I haven't heard of any pressuring. They've offered us the BOMs before, but we already have a couple so that didn't go anywhere.

Thanks, I might be able to use this info to discourage the 8yr old from wanting to go. Usually, he's very bored in church.

Stuart Chase once said, “For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don’t believe, no proof is possible.” I heard that on Criminal Minds, but I wholeheartedly agree. Atheists cannot conceive of God, and Theists cannot conceive of anything else. It’s all up to you.

My 8yr old son has been invited to a good friend and LDS classmate’s baptism. Of course we’ll go, but what should we expect? I know we’ll be expected to wear our “Sunday Best,” white shirts and ties for boys and dresses for girls, but what is a Mormon baptismal service like? Will we be treated to a strong dose of testimonies? And what would happen if we let the 8yr old go by hims

Okay, what evidence would you need in order to believe?

"The only definition an atheist can give you is a description of how other people define god which is what those authors are doing." This is my working hypothesis.

I see a very distinct pattern and I want to know if holds true for all atheists. So far, anecdotally, it does.

Simplify this discussion? What's so complicated about it in the first place? I do not believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but if the Flying Spaghetti Monster existed he would be made of Spaghetti and have the capability to fly. My model of the Flying Spaghetti Monster would be a Flying Ball of Spaghetti with one big eye in the middle. What's so hard about that?

I can model something else I don’t believe in. I don’t believe in Ghosts. But if Ghosts did exist, I would expect there to be some kind of demonstrable energy field to indicate where they were. I would expect that they would be invisible. I would expect they wouldn’t be physical. I would expect that they would be pure energy or similar to a magnetic field or something. My model of a G

Let me put it this way. I do not believe in Bigfoot. But if Bigfoot did exist, I would expect to see some sort of physical evidence. I would want to see a captured animal. If that’s not possible, I would like to see verified skeletal remains, hair samples, teeth, DNA, etc… etc… I would expect Bigfoot to be a physical animal. My model of Bigfoot is a physical animal.

Thank You for your response serena. I’m sorry you don’t feel this is worth it, too. There is one thing, however – I can tell by the fact that you say “Reality indicates no god/s” that you definitely expect to see “something.” That “something” you expect to see is what I’m looking for. Hopefully, others will tell me what it is.

In Chapter 3 of his work, “Why Won’t God Heal Amputees,” Marshal Brain, a noted atheist and purveyor of HowStuffWorks.com, constructs a Standard Model of God. "1. People believe that God is the almighty ruler of the universe. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, eternal, timeless, omnipresent and perfect. 2. People believe that God is the creator of everything. Actually, I think they're building the Gilbert Temple because most Mesa Mormons have moved to Gilbert. Central Mesa has become an enclave for Mexican Nationals. It no longer has a Mormon aura.

Thanks. Do you know if it's more prestigious for a Mormon to be married in the SLCT as opposed to another one?

Architecturally speaking, is the Temple in SLC the mother-of all temples? I mean, is it the best, the grandest, and the most elaborate? I'm a nevermo but I've been inside the Mesa AZ Temple, and I 'm witnessing the construction of the Gilbert Temple, and the one in SLC definitely seems to be larger and more ornate. Is it the "Supreme" Temple, or do all temples have equal status? Does

Ironically, I think the Mormon Church should embrace the Theory of Evolution - that way they could say that Godhood is naturally the next step in Human Evolution.

For whatever reason, people feel guilty for masturbating. Generally, if someone were to ask you point blank if you masturbate, especially in such a formal setting as an interview to determine your “worthiness”, it would strongly affect you emotionally. This emotional reaction impairs a person’s cognitive defenses and makes them easier to control; it works because it induces a “guilty”

I'm so sorry, for a nevermo who prides himself on knowing a lot about the Church, I admit that I don't know the answer to this... Do TBMs consider the Journal of Discourses and the History of the Church as Scripture?

Wow. Thanks for the info. I had heard of Solomon Spaulding before, but never his connection with Rigdon. I've also heard of "A View of the Hebrews" by Ethan Smith. Criddle makes a very convincing case. I had always taken that Joseph Smith was the sole author of the BoM at face value. If Mormonism started out as a Confidence Game rather than just a Legitimate Religious Move

I personally have never heard this one before, but I came accross a comment in one of the links that indicated he might have been the brains behind Joseph Smith.

I know it seems unlikely now, but think of the Roman Empire; it was rich, but it died. Although the Holy Roman Empire succeeded it, it wasn’t the Roman Empire anymore. Just because an entity is rich doesn’t mean it is immune to death.
