I could see proof that some people are born gay continuing to become more of an issue. It's a little bit awkward to say god made someone gay... but they still have to get married to someone of the opposite sex, stay married forever, and repopulate a planet with their spirit children. I don't see this trumping what's already out there, but it's possible that more attention could shift towards it.

You have very nicely worded responses! It's been a long time since I've visited this board and I'm glad that I did. It sounds like the bishop is a nice guy and that he is genuinely interested in having you come back. It also sounds like that he is heavily indoctrinated and that he is currently unable to even consider the validity of your position. Congratulations on leaving! It can be a hard road

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700048228/Mormon-missionary-work-moving-online.html Thoughts? I'm curious to see whether or not this will work out. On one hand, with social sites you can easily give your pitch to hundreds of people in a few minutes. This is something that would take an entire day if you were going door to door. On the other hand, I think the internet is a very good

I got banned from passing the sacrament a couple times for owning up to masturbating. I'm a dude though. I never experienced the *wink* it's okay thing. My line of questioning was usually more a long the lines of being guilt tripped for having sexual thoughts -- aka being human.

I just ran across this on the board and I'm curious as to whether it is true. Is there solid evidence that Joseph Smith prophesied that his son should be the next prophet instead of Brigham Young? If this is the case it would be a very straight forward way of disproving the LDS church. (for some reason the racist teachings, DNA evidence that Native Americans are descended from Asia, scriptural

Your husband might be watching porn if he is a mormon. Ironically, mormons watch more porn than anyone. http://www.myjourneytomillions.com/articles/what-states-watch-internet-porn-the-most/

Really it's amazing that so many members do as well as they do. Pay 10% of your income Spend 2 years knocking on doors Marry young Have lots of children If you do all those thing and somehow manage not to be broke you deserve kudos. A boot to the head for letting yourself get reeled into doing those things but also kudos.

I found a 1920 one once and was shocked at how many differences there were. (even better get a hold of a 1920 D&C). It would be really neat to get a hold of a original, but if your goal is just to prove that there are differences then you don't need to go that far back.

It's within the top five largest religions in the U.S. and a good chunk of those members pay ten percent of their income. I think the LDS church is in good shape financially (as much as I dislike it). It probably has more money than it knows what to do with and I think that will be the case for a while yet. If you owned a business where you could get ten percent of the income of 150 people for

I don't think comparing gay marriage to polygamy is fair. For gay marriage, you are giving someone that feels love for a member of the same sex the ability to have rights that are equal to those who feel love for the opposite sex. Are we naturally monogamous? Idk. I think in modern day society it probably works better at least.

I don't think you need to go if you don't want to. In all likeliness, the bishop is not interested in having an intellectual argument about the validity of the LDS church. And to have that type of discussion both parties have to be willing. He is going to try to browbeat/apologize/guiltrip you into coming back to church. Although if you think it will help your relationship with your wife (I

Cool - thank you. I was kind of fuzzy on this. I think it's interesting that the D&C doesn't explicitly talk about having spirit children (am I wrong?). Although, it looks like lds.org is interpreting it that way. I guess it follows from "they are gods, even the sons of God" and the somewhat numerous amount of verses that say priests will become gods just like the current god.

As a 12 year old member of the aaronic priesthood, I was taught that mormon men can become gods if they go to the highest part of the celestial kingdom. However, I'm curious about where this is backed up doctrinally? I know brigham young touched on it to at least some extent in the Journal of Discourses - but the LDS church has backed down from considering the JoD valid doctrine. Is this a

"I think that most people who end up hitting the exit button on religion are those to whom it really mattered - to whom things like god were so important that they wanted to know as much as they could - to get it right and get as close to their faith as possible. And never expected to see the man behind the curtain was not even there. I studied my way out by wanted to get deeply in. Just

I read the Allegory of the Cave excerpt and liked it. I do think we tend to have a limit to how much of our reality we are willing to accept as being untrue. If you point something out that means someone is wrong about where Brad Pitt was born, that is fine they will just shrug, accept the change, and move on. If you point something out that indicates a person's entire reality is false, its g

Your parents should go to the part of the wedding that they were invited to... Refusing to attend because of religious differences is not okay. The temple ceremony is silly anyway, they shouldn't feel too bad about not getting to go. However, you should try to talk your brother out of it. It's hard to be a happy mormon. Utah has the highest rates of anti-depressant use in the U.S. And doe

I don't understand why mormons view friends/family who decide they are no longer mormon as negatively as they do. Anyone have a good explanation of the reasoning? People who are never mormons and aren't interested in becoming mormons do not get the same negative treatment. I went to a very small ward. There was literally a handful of young men from 12 to 18. So we all knew each other pretty we
